It's a mix

But since 30 miles is the shortest (not counting the daily commute) then I'd have to say the average is over 30.

15 to 20 miles

The trials and tribulations of a weekend warrior with no time to ride . . .

Hope I find more time this year.

20 miles

Longer on the weekends lunch time rides from work tend to be shorter. Average joe for here I bet.

Old And In The Way

Darn, I opened this thread expecting to brag about something more personal. 50 miles is typical but the average will drop midsummer as more 30 mile weeknight rides are thrown into the mix.

3226mi/120rides = 27mpr

Not a great year mileage-wise - very late start, no centuries, poor fitness until a magnesium deficiency was diagnosed.

OTOH, it was a great year - my Mg deficiency was finally diagnosed, and my cycling, swimmimg, skiing, and overall health and well-being took a huge turn for the better.

Here's to '04 !!

Over 30 but barely

For me it is the summer months that bring the average down, but still managed to come in with an average of 31.

22.54 miles per ride in 2003

Total 5,250 and it's probably been like that for the last 5 years or so.

27mpr avg

Pre-dawn, non-winter weekdays: 25-28 miles

Weekends: 35 miles

Planning to get back to 5-6 days/wk in '04...'03 was a disaster.

Yea, but I wasn't planning to publish them...

Is it time to split this thread, or what ?

Splitting thread?

Nah. Let it go. Unless you're lookin' for somethin' to do and just want to check out the thread splittin' feature . . .

I suspect Antney knew this was where the thread was headed when he titled it.

Not counting short commutes and errand runs...

...I almost never do a ride less than 30 miles. I'll occasionally ride only 15-20 miles, usually as a recovery ride the day after an epic. But these rides are so vastly outnumbered by rides of over 50 miles, that I know they don't skew the average much. My after work rides in the daylight savings time period are generally between 30-40 miles, with much longer rides on the weekend. I don't ride much in the winter, but if the weather is such that I can get out at all, I'll generally do 30-40 miles to make it worth my while.

Is milage so important?

I went out today for 6 1/2 hours spinning a 42x17 mostly. I have no idea how far I went, haven't got around to buying one of those fancy computers things.

Don't Really Know

Just happy this machine will let me log in - boy I wish I had noted the password Antney assigned me . . . . .

Maybe he'd even send me an email telling me what it was . . . .

FWIW - this time of year I don't use a cycle computer - but I'm typically [in the woods] riding for 2.5 - 3 hours. 12 miles is a guess.

Haven't tottaled either miles or rides for last year but it was surely a roughly equal mix of 25 mi evening rides with 45+ mi weekenders. So I guess I'm guessing 30+

"average length" - interesting question...

Statistically speaking, during 2003 I guess it would be 15,185km / 194 rides outdoors for an average of 78km per ride.

Indoors I did another 171 rides for a total of 403 hours. My average kJ/hr during indoor training is actually higher than when riding on the road thus I guess technically speaking my average speed would be higher. This would mean my average mileage for an indoor ride would be very similar to outdoors.

In the FAT part of the distribution

Looks like 4400 miles/ 125 rides, so about 35.2 miles/per/ride.

in 2003...

4424 miles / 149 rides = 29.69 miles/ride

I would have guessed it was higher... hmmm.

Illusion vs. reality

Since I don't keep a journal, I have no easy way of knowing my true average. I would have guessed my average to be above 30mi/ride since most of our groups rides are 40+mi long. But now I think I might have guessed it a lot higher than the actual, too, just as you just found out.

I'm surprised by the large number of votes under 30 mile/ride. I thought, "no way, only 30 miles per ride, for this bunch of bike-aholics?" So maybe a lot of people keep training logs and are reporting the true instead of what they guessed, which would have been higher. But then again, those same people who actually train may actually do a lot more short and intense workout rides than a casual cyclo-tourist like me.
