How was the White Rabbit Cover Live?

I had never heard of Molly Tuttle but Sparky noticed that she was playing in Portland last night and told me I should see her, and I’m really glad I did because she and the whole band were fabulous. A virtuoso bluegrass band who, as Sparky alluded, could also do a jaw-dropping, powerhouse cover of “White Rabbit.” I probably wouldn’t have recommended that anyone try to cover Grace Slick, but I found it stunning both vocally and instrumentally. Molly’s vocal and guitar were haunting, and Bronwyn made her fiddle absolutely scream.

Yep, all serious pickers with chops galore in addition to Molly's talent. isn't her brother the bango player, gives Bella Fleck serious run for the money.

The banjo player is Kyle Tuttle, but they’re not related. There was an amusing discussion of that last night.

By the way, she is seriously the cross picking player to rule all cross pickers IMO.


The next vid that played after that one you linked is Imelda May, Irish singer that's been on my radar for years. Her roots are a rockabilly UK band that's good stuff IMO.

Yes, before singing “Crooked Tree” she explained her Alopecia, chucked her wig and performed the rest of the show that way. The crowd went crazy. My friend Cheryl called it “a tremendous statement for all women.” Another layer of greatness for this show.

Another thing that struck me was that her encore was an unplugged “You Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere” - beautiful and about as soft and slow a song as I can imagine. If she can do that and also “White Rabbit” along with rapid fire bluegrass, wow.

I was hoping you'd dig them, and her... I'd have been surprised if you reacted any differently. Anyone with bluegrass appreciation would dig that I figure. The slight contemporary approach for me does it.


Bluegrass and Jazz are both genre I can take only so much of in a row. ;) Why I always liked progressive rock and jazz fusiony rock..

Marty and his band were awesome too. All versatile musicians who played a wide range of music. From a great "Wipe Out" to an insane solo "Orange Blossom Special" on mandolin. His bass player is Earl Scruggs' grandson, who played a super Bob Wills western swing song. Encore was the Maine trucking song "Tombstone Every Mile," originally by Maine's Dick Curless.
Great week of music.

The Quebe Sisters came to the place we saw Marty in June, but I didn’t go. They’ll probably be back.

Cindy Cashdollar kills the lap steels. She does a lot of lap dobro/national playing and clinics etc.

Side note: Redd was Merle Haggard's touring git fiddler for a few years of tours.

She was playing lap dobro when I saw her. Opening for John Prine, not a bad show.

There are dinner theaters, a lots of nice size venues too. Merci Lounge, Whisky Bent Saloon has become a super hot spot for music I had read. Then of course the Ryman is likely to have bigger acts booked. Grand Ole Opry west of town likely to have bigger act booked, etc yada.
