Hips been chiming in...

Wife sez go see the guy who did her total hips. My first choice would not be the guy with the knife though...

Since late 2022, especially up steeps get pressure approaching pain. It has me a bit confused as my right hip and knee have always been more sensitive to steeps/pressure/pain. So left would be fine and right chime in. If anyone recalls right was my Tib/Fib/plateau fractures 2006. So been weaker leg and any stress shows up right side and not left since.

Until late last year that is...

This time it is both symmetrically, I mean exactly same pressure approaching pain. I back off, but not being great uphill [edge of Clyde], going easier up already being unremarkable... gets pitiful.

Thus more enjoyable riding days are flat landing, some undulating jambs etc. I don't wanna succumb to flat landing only, but is it that time?

Deciding on a direction for PT, Dr., Acupuncture, yoga.. something. Some luck [so far] with the following.

Hip ball [tennis and Hypersphere ball] deep muscle therapy in last ditch attempt in attempt to avoid seeking professional resources.

Google 'Tennis Ball Hip Massage'. This is actually working so far. The first time using the tennis ball, I could not believe the pain of it. Akin to when a massage therapist digs deep at a knot in a muscle, I mean ouch!

I've had the Hypershere ball for a while, was a gift from friend/cyclist. Used to use mainly on quads and ham strings and arms/elbows etc.

For those not familiar:

Anyone else's body doing similar, and what solutions are you finding most effective.

Hip Replacement

You may recall that I had an emergency hip replacement (on the DS) after a crash 11 years ago (almost to the day). I noticed it for the first six months or so, but I rode three centuries the next summer without any trouble and--honestly--I have almost completely forgotten it's there.

If non-surgical methods work, great. But I'd have zero hesitation about replacement, should it come to that.

Listen to your wife. With her background I assume she would not make that recommendation lightly. A good surgeon will not do surgery unless it’s indicated. If it’s not, he may refer you to PT.
I can top Andy. I have a femur repair on top of a hip replacement, and the leg is great.

Nothing similar here. [knocks on wood] Despite some of my life choices I've been almost disgustingly healthy (physically) for most of my life. I may not even get sick (cold/flu/etc) for a couple years at a time. I'm also fully expecting to reach a point where I'm going to get everything and everything fails all at once.

Hope you get it sorted out.

He's definately the guy when time comes. He did 2x for her, and several friends are 1x & 2x replacement patients. In fact going for ride with 2x friend who has not ridden with me in a few years.

His 2nd hip he had some serious muscle tightness issues after.
Only since he got into and now cert teacher chi running he's showed interest in riding. 82 yr old retired phamisist.

I am bringing bike with 40s and have zero intent to make this anything but positive for him. ;)

Well that went bad and good. 1st time I got John out on bike in over 2 years. We stropped at a Star bucks and some wonky expansion seam compressed and he spilled into a table with people having Fraps. He lost some skin and blood. The Star Bucks is bottom of OSHU Medical plaza, so pre-med students where all over him assisting. I hope it does not discourage him, seemed fine on return ride to his place. Coban wrap and all...

On the hip front the news is encouraging. I did 15 miles before getting John along. Included a semi serious Hill to test me out. After my Hypersphere rolls before i even got outta bed this morning I was way less stiff once I put feet on the floor.

I went up that hill faster than I can remember, maybe since 2018 when I got down to 200 lb. I am +15 now.

I felt nothing in my left and 1/2 as much in my right as I've been. I will be sure to discuss this with Dr. when time comes.

It also helps my fitness if getting to a reasonable state about now too.

I just rode the bike that was already in the van, The Race Shop SLR Domane with 32mm GranPrix 5Ks and not particularly light wheels. Not particularly heavy either..

All my joints (so far) appear to be OK. However, for my last (70th) birthday, my wife gave me this card:

The sentiment of the card is accurate for many of us, but we should still do acid.
