How is anyone not checking to see if WvA is human?

If you look at the hundred plus year history of the TdF, he's one of only three riders over that time who have won sprint stages and mountain stages and time trials. The other two being Eddy Merckx and Bernard Hinault.

go to the video

quote:
“I jumped when I wanted to but unfortunately, I had a problem with my gears when I was sprinting,” Cavendish said afterwards, any anger turning to frustration but also satisfaction about his performance.

“It went from the 11 to the 12, and I had to sit down to get back to the 11. I stood up and it went back to the 12, so I’m pretty devastated actually. The boys did a good job. It was one of those situations where it’s not meant to be.”

When I was watching the aerial shot of the sprint, I was wondering what was going on with Cav. He seemed to be up and down and that is exactly what he described in his comment. Not sure if that robbed him of the win, but it obviously had an impact and you could see that as the sprint unfolded.

They said Cav had the highest speed recorded of any sprinter this year, so I guess his legs were OK. The injury is a shame.

Funny comment by WvA - they tried to get him to say he didn’t contest yesterday because he was focusing on today, and he said “no I was tired from the Pyrenees.”

Definitely tuning in tomorrow!

I won't deny being influenced by WvA. Getting back to my house requires hitting some, at minimum 16%, steep grades and I usually drag myself up in survival mode.

Watching him peel off the other day and nearly fall over from exhaustion made me realize what a wuss I've been. I won't say I went up fast, but I attacked the climbs on the way home this morning harder than I have since moving here.

I've seen Rob stubbornly at max HR go up a hill with force. Not sure that is a healthy approach.

I recall gulping air fully anaerobic going up refusing to yield. Just not in the last 6-ish years. All that cardio Dr. and Echo scans of my Aortic Root makes me think, why anymore.. ;) For seconds faster up short hills, minutes up long one of course. ;O

Jut set 2 PRs for 5 and 10min power coming up that hill just a few minutes ago. Healthy be damned, I love smashing the watts.

He's Danish, what do you expect?

He does seem to be off form. We'll have to see what happens after the rest day.

Last dude standing?

I’m sure you guys have paid more attention to the course than I have, but holy cow, 5 more mountain stages plus a somewhat hilly tt. I think the question is who cracks when. I don’t know the answer. I would favor Pog, but that’s just a WAG. Anyway, should be epic, dude!
It’s great that both are fine sportsmen.

Elaine sez he's descended from Captain Jack Harkness.

UAE looks very different this year. Last year Pog was isolated at critical points over multiple stages and they lost the tour because of it. This year they are really in the game and taking control.

Phil and Bob made the point, and it's true, that the only way Vingo is going to win the GC is to find a way to drop Tadej. His explosiveness will allow him to keep grabbing those little bits of time if they are together at the end, like he did today.

I wonder about the TT, though. Pogacar won his first tour Lemond style in the final TT but I feel like Vingegaard is the better TTer...this really is a super exciting race.

Super exciting indeed.

I’m not sure teams matter much at this point. Pog or Vingo sits on the other’s wheel, either drops him or not. They don’t really care about anyone else.

I still favor Pog, but it’s possible he cracks, or that Vingo is saving his matches for a major attack in the Alps.

The stages themselves have all been interesting, but that’s secondary to GC.

Lots of mountains to go!
