I can see them as a sensible option on a tandem, where very powerful brakes are mandatory if you actually want to stop. I haven't tried them, so I should probably withhold judgement.

Which raises the joke about tandems...

The old story about the captain cranking for all he's worth and getting exhausted going up the hill, and he gets to the top, catches his breath, and asks the stoker what he thought, and the stoker replies "Yeah! I was holding onto the brake for dear life to keep us from going backwards!"

tandem brakes

Our beloved "85 Rodriguez tandem came with a Phil disc on the front. I later read a commentary that you needed to be a Zen Master to adjust the brake, which agreed with my experience.
