I do wish manufacturers would offer 12-z cassettes in 12 speed. I have campy 12 speed and the 11-29 cassette deletes the possible advantage over 11 speed. I truly dislike 11 tooth cogs.

I'm with you, but I'll go one step further and ditch the 12 for a 13. With a compact crank, I don't need a gear bigger than that.

It frustrates me that Campy has 12 speed cassettes with 29 and 32 tooth cogs, but they're basically useless to me because they start with 11s. Apparently, they won't allow Miche to make cassettes starting with 12, 13 or 14 tooth cogs, so there are no aftermarket options, either. I really would like to upgrade the bike I built back in January to 12-speed (13-32 would be ideal), but if I can't get the gearing I want, there's no point.

I like my juniors 14-28 cassette with an 36/54 Ovals I have. ;) Or used to when riding with fast ride/riders.

Covid pretty much halted that..

Well I guess that 12-speed junior cassettes will eventually appear, as they did for 11-speed.

I know someone who on their touring bike has created a cassette using the smallest three cogs off the 14-28 cassette combined with the remaining cogs coming from an 11-40 cassette to give 14-15-16-17-19-21-24-27-31-35-40.

It goes to 11!

I am never sure whether it is macho cyclist "demand" for 11 cogs that a few hundred people on the planet can actually spin out, or is it marketing nonsense from the manufacturers. Either way, 11t cassettes should be "specialist" cassettes rather than standard. Even 12t has little use for the vast majority of cyclists. Back in the day you were supposed to learn how to spin but now people want to pedal slowly downhill in their 50/12. Nonsense. And hey you kids, get off my lawn!

Is it a down grade?

Who needs 11 but,

OTOH, who the hell here needs 12 cogs? You need a 13-29 or 32 corncob, really? I’ve got a 12-32 11 speed on my primary road bike with a compact crank, and a 38 x 12-42 1x11 on my gravel bike, both fine with me. I can see preferring narrower spacing if you are doing fast pace line riding, but who here does that? And if you do that, you probably don’t need the real low gear.

I do like an 11 with my 42/32/20 microdrive crank on my Mt Washington bike.

42/32/20

Covers a lot, and with weight too.

My Strong All Road was 22/32/42 with a 12-30 for a decade. Now a 28/40 with a 11-36 I think. ;) Lost the triple when I finally used the Di2 ports Carl had put in the build. The triple XTR Di2 FD was just too expensive to keep the crankset on the bike. I still may do it one day if I get the RD for 150.00 instead of 400.00

The triple only got the granny used loaded on hills pretty much. But, there times I could recover still moving forward and up hill @ 20 GI too. ;) If only marginally.

Sort of a side point; I tried on a road climber/bike 36t cassette with a 30-46. I found it was too low to be useful and actually slowed me quite a bit. I'd loose too much momentum at the slow speed on steep stuff and get lactic acid buildup quickly too.

I tried it though...

Agree completely. On my 10s setup, I used a 13-26 and that was plenty low enough for any hills I had to climb. Now I have a 12-25 with a 50/34 and really NEVER put it into the 50/12, which would be over 32 mph at 100 rpm. Never happens and certainly I never worry about running out of a high gear. The only times I get going faster than 32 mph is on a downhill where it is faster to get into a tight tuck than to pedal.

Actually, if you ride on the flats it is really nice to have that next gear only 5-6% different. A little shift in wind speed/direction and I always have the right gear so I'm not spun out or lugging. Maybe I just have a narrow power bandwidth, but my legs like to spin a pretty narrow range and so having the 12-19 part of my cassette with one-tooth jumps suits me just fine.

For fear of broken bones, I stopped trying to go faster when going too fast already a long while back.

Besides which at my girth just getting aero is all I need descending if I want to haul. #bulkl\gravity
