Vuelta [no spoiler] Stage 10

I thought the end of the stage [10] got wonky. Conflicting GC info for quite a few minutes.

Stage 11 the riders staged a protest/delay.

Turns out they changed a rule after the fact changing the outcome of the GC, WTF?

How do you start a stage with a rule in place and change it after the stage ends? Teams tactics based on the rule being in place. [no election jokes please]

They didn't change a rule, they determined which rule applied to the finish, as there are separate rules for bunch sprints and regular stages. The stage was initially expected to be a bunch sprint, but it was actually a pretty steep uphill finish and the UCI decided that the bunch sprint rule should not apply.

Yeah, it was a confusing mess for a few minutes, but it seems that they got it right.

Actually I read they stated before the stage started which way they'd be going, and than changed it up after the most but not all riders went over the finish line.

Also the AU commentary conversation about in during Stage 11 said same thing.

Sure, they realized that the stage was not going to produce a bunch sprint because of the steep uphill finish, so the bunch sprint rule shouldn't be used. It makes perfect sense and it was the right decision for the circumstances. The mistake was not reviewing the course adequately beforehand to select the right rule. and they corrected that.

"right decision for the circumstances"

That would be one opinion I suppose...

Well, it was exciting and unpredictable all the way to the wire. Well worth watching.

Sadly, it's the last race of the season. Let's hope 2021 is a better year!

I second those emotions! There was some very exciting bicycle racing over the last few months with quite a battle right up to the last day of 2 of the grand tours. Made for some good drama and viewing.

Primoz sure comes back strong after a rest day. I want to know what that regime is. For me I mean. ;)
