Still getting out there

Still getting out there

I'm still sneaking in rides periodically, as work and the weather permit. Most have been short stints on the gravel bike or MTB, but I managed to get in 35 miles on the road yesterday.

I've been a bit under the weather this week (not sick, but not quite right), but it's not affecting my ability to ride, so while staying away from people except when absolutely necessary, I'm still getting outside in open spaces for fresh air and sunshine. I've been working primarily from home for the last year and a half, and my social life consists primarily of visiting Linda and other friends on weekends, so it's not really a significant change for me. I do feel for folks who have to make major adaptations to their lives.

Me too

Since getting back from South America I’ve had some cold symptoms, which are mostly gone now. I’m thinking it’s more likely a cold than the virus, but am self-quarantining and taking no chances.

At work most stuff has been cancelled or extended. I told my assistants to stay home. For meetings I’m becoming acquainted with ZOOM.

Getting out to walk the dog is good socially distant exercise. I’ll ride when I’m sure the cold stuff is gone.

It’s hard to see how this changes much anytime soon....

Riding, but reluctant to really over reach and stress my body for subsequent recovery. In case that bug winds up in me, I don't want to be is a lesser physiology state to combat. Plus I have a slight something going on, which my current psychology may be messing with in my head. Or how do I know I am not the first case in my county which has managed to sit at zero thus far. Zero undiscovered, I doubt seriously it is actually zero frankly.

I refused to attend jury duty last week, and that was the rescheduled commitment from late last year.. Threat of contempt not withstanding. But talked it out with them. Now the web site sez if you are over 60 you will be excused. It didn't say that previously.

I am amazed at how many folks are out and about when I get out on rides of late. I just stay away from folks. I almost had to come to the aid of a young Mom walking her baby/carriage when some tool started ranting at her about her milk fed offspring or some such illness aimed at her.

Then there is NOT wanting to get near the ER from such shit as above or a fall, etc.

We had an ER visit last week. It was empty thankfully, and soon after one of us had our gall bladder out. [was not me]. This got moved up a day as the surgery center [one of us works at] has closed for the interim. Which is convenient for the one of us recovering whilst her work is closed.

Near term financial issues worrisome. Guess putting 1/2 the rainy day funds into the market is a no go now... But not looking forward to that fund diminishing, but better that than not having it like a lot of folks we know with big mortgage etc. Which is not a issue for us due to time of purchase here in 2011. But we know quite a few folks that have closed in the last few years and the financed amounts are very scary indeed...

I am not anti-social, but pro-solitude. So for my riding habits it does not change much. Except for today. We had a beautiful day today and it seems the whole country (Netherlands) went out for a walk in the woods or at the beach. Causing traffic-jams everywhere .
Did a 3 hour trainer ride inside.
I will take the MTB tomorrow to do a gravel course. Alone and careful.

Pretty stupid incident yesterday. Following my SO on the MTB I was dreaming along, not having to think about speed and directions. I saw her veering to the left and started wandering why, when I hit a 45 cm high log at 10 mph that was across the trail. By some weird reflexes and the fact that I hit it straight, I got my front wheel over it and was stuck with the chainwheel in the log. No fall! (but big fail).

Yes, we (wife and I) have been riding on our own lately - for years we've been going on two or three group rides a week with the same group of friends, but our group has decided to disband for the time being. I guess the authorities here could eventually completely forbid recreational cycling, as has been done in several European countries, but for moment cycling is still permitted.

Symptoms

Just so everybody is clear, the two distinct symptoms of covid 19 are fever and dry cough. Any other symptoms are rare, though obviously there will be a range in people.

Still riding daily, weather-permitting, but sometimes it's just a quick ride on a friend's bike that is here for servicing.
I'm impressed with these people still wearing out their 9100 and RED chains at a good rate of several per year, beats my efforts handily (at least with my Shimano 8s chain on my favorite vintage "rider".

I have a 1.25-hour loop that is starting to get boring, even as it ascends to good altitude with a return ride that goes through town where I can pick up groceries on the fly.
The somewhat-bare store shelves are disturbing, with store personnel telling me that shipments of many items have not been arriving. I'm not really needing anything in particular but find myself going to two different stores to find what I might be looking for.
This is the time of year where yard work starts to consume my daily energy surplus, so the current lack of recreational club rides is actually well-timed for me.

I've been hearing for years how some parts of the US are subject to very high rates of obesity, and I suspect that this pandemic may hit particularly hard in those regions due to already-taxed respiratory systems.
Never too late to get in shape?

I started hitting a nice hill near by. The one whilst at the top had all the volcano views I have post pictures of over the years since here.

My intent is to start doing repeats. I started with one trip up to test my legs Sunday. I will start adding a repeat each trip over there. I rode the SL3 S-Works Tarmac which landed here [as a frameset] late last year.

Not sure if it is a good climber or if my lowest weight in 13 years just makes it seem so. Not easy, but got straight up as opposed to not. Not been up that one for a few years.

Picture an old fart on an old race bike going up in a 30/30, wait... better not to probably.

Well, we got 4" of heavy, wet snow last night, so the woods will be a muddy mess and the roads will be wet for probably a week or more. It's a typical spring occurrence, but it still sucks.

My local rides are almost exclusively done solo, unless Linda happens to come up here. The only group rides I do are with her and friends down on the Cape, or in organized events, which are already being cancelled or moved. We'll likely be cancelling our planned vacation in Europe shortly, while we can still get our deposits back.

I did make the mistake of taking a bike path for about 12 miles last weekend. I seemed like everyone from the area who was looking for some fresh air and exercise was there! None of them were coughing, but I won't do that again.

It's going to be an interesting spring and summer, and hopefully, a very busy fall, riding-wise.

Yes

Weather permitting I have been riding my MTB alone in the local state park.

Actually gaining a bit of fitness, eating better and less.

Roads are the way to go

I can do anaerobic threshold intervals and wander all over the road if needed during the effort and not worry about cars. Every day is like 5:00 am on a Sunday morning on the roads these days

Well. That explains cycling jerseys right there. At least the loss of taste part.

Like Pino, I'm an isolato, so riding solo these days is not much different than pre-virus. The only difference, as I said in an earlier thread, is that my favorite coffee stops are closed.
