Campy Sub Compact Crank rumuor

Rumor has it Campy will introduce a 32-48 crank soon. Its not the 30-46 I'd dreamed of but close enough. if this happens, I'll have a full campy drivetrain bike for the first time in my cycling career.

I plan to step boldly into the world of 12 speed, leaving 9 speed finally.

IMO of course:

With Short Cage RD and 12-29 & 32/48. To my old ars that is not close enough to almost for expense involved.

with 32/48:
12 13 14 15 16 17 19 21 25 27 29
107 99 92 86 80 76 68 61 51 48 44
72 66 61 57 54 50 45 41 34 32 30

A Mid Cage RD with get you the 32 cog, and 32/32=27GI.

Mid cage Record or SR? Is there even a Mid cage in the 12s?
_____________

Having said that, The Helix SR-80th-Ani=30 cog biggest. SR on two Other bikes will do a 32 with short cage. A RD thing or DR hanger placement thing, or both, dunno.

So with front 34/50 and the 32 cog, For me is is still almost and blows hole in the ratio spacing rear.

Now it seems the 28/42 chainset with 11-32 on the Conquest is in the sweet spot for hills. Front shifting great, But this is Di2 and it might not have front shifting be as good cabled depending on FD/Group?

I had a 32/44 front I cobbled on the Salsa CX. This seemed just outside the sweetspot for hills without a 34/36 cassette [XTR RD], That range cassette for rollers and flatlands plain sux.

BUT, maybe depends more on a particular ride size/weight. Which until this year I have been squarely Clydesdale. I will be hitting road this year with 34/50_11-30 on the Spectum. And today, will have 30lb less on board proud to say. Will this cause me to update the above? Or will I still be a slow old fart?

And of course later in the year with peak power/fitness??

The Campy 12 speed stuff will do at least a 32, as that is offered currently.I think they currently offer a 11-29 and 11-32. I hope the cassette choices improve as 12 trickles down thru the lower tier groups. I'd be happy with a 12-29 or so, as I don't often tackle really steep stuff in real life, just on the trainer.

The videos of Belgium and the Ardennes look lke the backroads around here. The Amstel Gold course in Holland has some 20% stuff in it. Thankfully its pretty short as I tend to overheat and meltdown on it.

Thus, the 32/42 and 28/42 of which I spoke are Sub-Compact.

Another way at it this; One bike has a 26/39/46 triple. I never bothered to install the triple Ultegra 10s shifters and left the 2x Dura-Ace shifters on. Just put an extra inline cable adjuster temporarily [3 years ago]. I spin the adjuster to get either a double 26/39 or 39/46 when I take up a bunch of cable. ;)

When I ride with Elaine I leave it 26/39, her triple is also 26/39 but never saw the 52 chain ring anyway.

I've tried 46-30, but I don't like the large difference between the chainrings. It's the same percentage difference as if you were running a 53-34 setup. I generally run 42-30 or 42-29 - I find that even with a 42t big chainring, I rarely need to use the 11t cog, and when I do I'm still at a comfortable cadence at 50+kph.

I don't mind the 46/30, but I use it mainly off-road or for gravel rides. I've done a few road rides with it and haven't found it bothersome, other than that the Di2 SynchoShift downshift from the big to small ring is too slow. Shimano needs to reprogram it to shift the front and rear simultaneously, rather than sequentially.

I'd rather have a 44 in the front, but now that I've found a source for 12-32 cassettes, I'm OK with the 46. So far, I can't complain about the performance of the Miche cassettes.

Cassette source

IRD also makes 12-32, both 10 and 11 speed. Not cheap, but I’ve used a 10 speed forever.

I looked for the IRD and the 12-32 was impossible to find at the time unless you were looking for a Campy/Shimano conversion cassette. IIRC, the Miche cassettes were about half the price, including shipping from Italy. It remains to be seen how durable they are.

"but Campagnolo also offers an 11-34 option, still with single-tooth jumps across the first seven smallest sprockets"

;)

I think I see a TI Carver getting upgraded to Chorus 12 Speed with hydro brakes by fall...

"Alas, still no 12-x cassette."
There's no 46/30 chainring option, either. Looking at the crankset, it appears that a 30 tooth chainring would be possible, so I don't understand why they don't offer it. Eventually, they're going to have to go there...
