For sure

Unlike the past few finals which were drab 1 - 0 games, this game was what you would expect . The Croatians played wonderfully, but the French were better, able to capitalize on every opportunity they had.

FWIW, my 12 y/o grandson and I agreed that the game was not terribly well-played.

He and I disagreed about the foul against Griezmann which led to France's first goal--he thought Griezmann took a dive, I thought he got clipped on the ankle. I also thought the hand ball penalty was correct.

Great goals by Pogba, Mbappe and Perisic. Shaky goalkeeping on both ends. The Croatian captain, Modric, is wonderful to watch.

The Pussy Riot-inspired pitch invasion, with Putin at the game, was street theater.

In what way was the game "not terribly well played"?

I thought France is so much stronger than Croatia, the end result was a foregone conclusion before the match started. Granted, games occasionally gone the wrong way. Weaker team may over-perform, or one errand goal changes the outcome. But in that final, France basically dominated. Despite their goalie mistake, they slaughtered their opponent.

Croatia played valiantly. But they were no match for France.

On Griezmann's stumble, it's impossible to be 100% sure given there're only limited view of the camera. But for the many years before VAR, TV cameras had been showing majority of "stumbles" were clipped. Referees don't always give out the free kick. Only the TV viewers could see the mistake. Players and couches could see it afterward too. With VAR, hopefully there are more correct calls going forward.

I actually thought Croatia did a much better job of controlling and advancing the ball. It really seemed like most of the game was played on the French side of the field. What I didn't see wa any one touch passing which I think would have helped to get through the defensive sets.

The way France played reminded me of Italy in its hay days (which decade was that? I lost track): defense and counter attack.

France had a couple of very fast runners to call on to simply run past the opponents defense. They also relied heavily on "set play" when they were within striking distance.

I like the many goals where the attacking side move the ball to 1) make space/create holes in the defensive circle; 2) pass to unimpeded teammate; 3) shoot without interference. Both teams did admirable job on that. Many of the shot at goal were beautiful to watch, including some that didn't score.
