Well, just don't ride the bike to the start. ;)

I noticed they have shorter versions too.

I was at a race the other day and a guy I was talking to had just come back from there.

A couple of guys from our club did it a couple of years back. It took them 15 and 16 hours. It certainly an accomplishment, but it doesn't sound like fun at all.

Fun?

Is in the eye of the rider.

I think all races are pain not fun. But others apparently think it’s fun enough to go weekly. D2R2 is actually a race even though most rode it as a ride. Still, a guy I know who’s a strong ride stopped doing it a few years back because it “too much pain and NOT FUN”! That’s because he raced it. I no longer ride D2R2 because it takes too much “work” to get to the fitness level to have SOME fun.

Can’t understand why anyone runs a marathon, never mind an ultra-marathon. So DK200 is equally beyond my understanding. But I can see it could be “fun” for the right person.

D2R2 a race?

D2R2 is hardly a race. There is no mass start and they serve a big lunch in the middle. Sure, a small number of riders may ride it like a race, but that's also true of your local charity century.

I agree that you have to be in good shape for it to be fun (at least the longer courses).

There's a lot of griping about the pain the DK200 creates in your wallet, too. It's gotten very pricey, as have accommodations in the Emporia area. Plus, for most people, it involves a lot of travel and the related expenses.

It's not like us making a day trip to ride the D2R2. Even though the event is expensive, the proceeds go to a good cause and the peripheral costs are minor.

The $1000.00 yearly biggy here last year got cancelled due to wildfires, as did my Crater lake 2017 plans. When you pay, you release them for all the usual liabilities, hold harmless et al. You also are agreeing that the funds are a donation that is not refundable under any circumstance.

Luckily, there is a lot black ink in the organization. Most got 50% back, after being asked to not take it allowing it stand as a donation. This even though they had no legal reason to do so.

I have spoken to a few folks in the club on rides that had registered for it and do yearly. About 1/2 of them had no problem not taking any refund and allowing the moneys to stand as donations.

I am curious to see if those folks get 1/2 off for 2018. I suspect ridership to be way down for 2018.

I don't know about the griping the event is getting ever more popular every year, they actually have to turn people away.
Any big event is going to cost you to get there and find a place to stay.

The gravel adventure stuff is off the charts here. With all that east OR dessert.

A single event that costs a GRAND? What the heck does it include?

OK, it's a week long event that includes meals and support services. I thought you were talking about a one-day ride.

Timing chips

Those are so they know who starts and who finishes (as opposed to being still out on the course).

Award ceremony? prizes?

The first year I rode it I made a wrong turn and cut some miles off the course. After I finished I reported that I hadn't ridden the whole course, and the worker laughed and indicated no one cared.

"no one cares"

Kind of like the Grand Fondos. Most riders don't even know it's a race!

The majority treats it as a ride while a small percentage treats it as a race. And surprise surprise, some winners were found doping!

That's not entirely true. Many come from as far as New York. A few even from Phily, DC. Or Maine! :o)

But it's a very different event in spirit (don't know about DK200). Most out of town riders pitch their tents at the start, which is included in the entry fee.

Also included as part of the entry fee, SHOWER! Haha!!!

(while a few of us out of towners sleep under a roof, we're the minority. I didn't detect any price jump in area motels)

I know for the 1000.00 fee [above link] they will move your tent/gear to the next arranged night's camp site. And give you food. ;)
