I'm somewhat disappointed with it, too

If my hands are too dry, too damp or dirty at all, the fingerprint reader doesn't work. Between that and the fact that they force you to enter your password periodically anyway, it gets frustrating at times. I use a complex password and entering it is a pain, especially when I'm being forced to do so unnecessarily. That should be my decision, not Apple's.

Maybe this will help:

Settings > Touch ID & Passcode > Change Passcode > (enter current passcode) > (choose 'Passcode Options' at the bottom) > Custom alpha-num / custom num / 4-digit num

Thumbprint hint:
Don't limit the pattern to the same small patch of thumb. Try to get as much thumb as you can represented. Just consider how much area the classic "7 pennies" pattern covers. You'll end up touching the sensor a dozen times to set it up. What's that, a dozen seconds? I'm not trying to be provocative, some of these arcane settings get to me too.

Settings > Touch ID & Passcode > Fingerprints ">"

While you're there, set up your other thumb "> Add a Fingerprint..." (and the Mrs.?)

Been there, done that

All of those "disappeared" after a while, GRADUALLY!

First, the left thumb stopped working. Then the right thumb gets really finicky and I needed to keep moving it so it "gets" a specific patch. Eventually, it stopped working altogether. And I had to do the "learning" process all over again...

Yep - my fingerprints stopped working pretty quickly except for my right thumb. I just reinputted four other fingers. Let's see how long they will last . . .
