Indoor Cycling

Recently, our man in Vermont Matthew Curry reported:
On a completely different note, continuing the indoor cycling thread derail, my latest movie was the great Italian classic General Della Rovere. I saw it the first time when I was about 12, and it remains a great favorite, not only for its cinematic virtues, but because it investigates a real issue of morality and identity - who we are, and what we become, and how we decide. Highly recommended.

I'll probably get on the trainer this weekend

A lot of the roads and trails on the Cape are real mess after the storms, plus there's substantial snow in some areas. I did some trail maintenance last weekend, but there were just so many trees down that were too big to cut with my trusty Silky Big Boy that it was basically a drop in the bucket. It's not as bad up here, but we got a lot more snow. There may not be much of anywhere to ride outdoors for a while.

If I wasn't worried about getting arrested, I'd get a trailer for the fat bike and go clear the junk off the trails with a chainsaw. ;-)

For entertainment on the trainer, I'll just watch the route videos while listening to nature sounds that I downloaded. That should make for tranquil riding.

Weekend

I'll probably have a day of snowshoeing (it's supposed to be 5F Sunday am) and one day of Two Climbs in Mallorca. Love those hairpins!

I have been spending a ton of time on the trainer this year so far, even when it hasn't been that cold it has been to wet to get out much.
I am all for any watching suggestions, open to any some good TV series as well as movies etc...
To get the ball rolling, earlier this winter I watched the Netflix series Godless and I thought it was fantastic.
I have been doing most of my riding on Rouvy so far, have that running on the laptop while I watch stuff on the iPad.

I still live in NH...

...but I'm back and forth to the Cape pretty regularly.

I usually split my indoor cycling between the local college gym and home. Since my wife swims there three times a week, it's convenient to go and pedal at the same time (my swimming semi-permanently curtailed by shoulder spurs). Since we're there for an hour and a half or so, I don't succumb to the temptation to stop too soon. For that I usually load up an MP3 player with podcasts.

At home, either between days or when it snows, I use the home machine (my daughter, a bike mechanic, was for a while fixing the fleet of a spinning gym, and when they updated, she got me a very nice fancy Startrac for about what the aluminum would cost as scrap). For that I have a TV and DVD/VCR player, and figure to go through some movies. Not sure what the next movie will be. I'm having fun rewatching some favorite classics, but I may have to get something with a little more action to up the cranking speed. If I pedal faster, do you think I can finally catch Franka Potente?

If anyone is interested in a way to capture YouTube lectures to MP3 for podcasts, I have a method that uses open source software that works quickly.

My previous computer had a sound card with software that included a "what you hear" option that would record anything to MP3 in real time, but I no longer have it. I think some things like Audacity still do that, but haven't gotten around to it. I'd be glad of any ideas.

Smelly's ERG Videos for me

Monigner 12 week program.

I have been on it for about 11 weeks and this morning for the first time I am bagging my scheduled 2x6 FRC's and hour tempo workout, with the previous sessions this week and 2 X week weight work (Training Peaks weight workout - presently muscular endurance phase 3 X 20 reps) legs are dead and or The first time no motivation to get back on the Computrainer, usually by now weather gets better daylight savings etc I'm transitioning to the road I may have ridden 2 X on the road since January all of my miles have been on the Computrainer and frankly I am getting tired of my riding buddies Scott Moninger and Tim Cusick of erg videos fame and potentially my first race of the season is in two weeks...

The program is VLC media player. I'll leave it up to you to install it, but here's a link: https://sourceforge.net/projects/vlc/?source=directory
It's popular and SourceForge tries to maintain a good reputation.

The general instructions are:
Get a URL from YT, Start VLC
Right click the big empty area where you think a play list should be
Choose 'advanced open'
Choose the 'network' tab
Paste in the URL
Click select
dialog will close and VLC will wait for you to do something
Double click the title
As soon as it starts to play click pause and go back to the play list
(look for a button on the row of buttons on the bottom with the play button, one that looks like a bulleted list of 3 items, that's the list button.)
Right click the title you just paused.
Choose Save
Dialog box opens
You'll see Settings > Convert > profile (pull down menu)
You've got to touch the menu. (It's open source, it may not strictly behave like other programs)
I choose "Audio MP3" (strike the letter A twice is my shortcut)
Click [browse] for the location to save it.
Click to save it
I captured a 7 minute clip in 1.5 minutes testing for this.
In the instructions I tried to include everything important but there may be an obvious button push or two missing near the end.

If you've used Audacity then you know there will be behaviors in the interface you're not used to, like a form entry will always be the first one until you over write it or the save place will revert between sessions.

They also oversell some of the capabilities. The biggest thing is while it is capturing don't expect it to do something else like enter the next URL. As soon as you distract it, your capture is forgotten no questions asked. You'll be left with a perfectly useful fragment of the capture that was interrupted. If you want to do several, set up the play list and then babysit the process. Setup, setup, setup, save, save save.

I'll try to answer any questions. I've tried to do some esoteric things and met mixed success.

Legs dead, no motivation, hate riding buddies

Rick, Scotty and Timmy have you right where they want you!

With my various maladies, I haven't messed with structured training, though I rode in Mallorca this morning.

My project is to decide how if at all to limit my riding in view of the aneurysm. My PCP said keep a lid on it, while the specialists say go ahead and ride hard, but there is no real data, and I do some pretty strenuous stuff if left to my own devices. As I understand it, the danger is a spike in blood pressure. So you definitely want a good, gradual warm up. After that, I'm not sure what happens to bp with a hard effort. A friend who is a doc (and has a 4:02 mile in his background) said for some bp may actually decrease with effort and elevated heart rate. He suggested a special type of stress test to measure this, preferably on a bicycle ergometer. I'm going to look into this. I've gradually been ramping it up on the CT, though not near my max. After a pretty spirited effort and a short warmdown, I've taken bp and it's pretty low. So riding hard may be good for me! More to come.

Thanks. I actually already have VLC on my laptop but never tried it for anything but DVD's. I'll have to dig deeper.

I have to say, out of all of the structured stuff I've done, I think i get the most actual real world benefit from the FRC stuff. So long as there's a wheel to suck once I close the gap, it certainly has helped me to get there. But yeah, by March I'm ready for outside.

I do get how much benefit you get from structure. Wahoo is behind the curve a bit, but once I can upload .tcx file workouts I'll do them outside. I'd rather have to hit the targets myself now anyway, I'm seriously burned out on erg mode.

I agree that FRC time is well spent. I see no improvement when I stay at or below my FTP, but going above seems to open things up.

The copy of VLC I Had did not work for Youtube videos, but the latest version does.

Actually it doesn't. It plays a youtube video, and the conversion dialogue comes up, and it saves an MP3 file but it contains no data.

Limited patience tonight but I'll keep trying options.

It's an understatement to say there's more than one way to skin a cat with VLC. Starting with another method, you may see the same dialogs, but it works. I tried to convert some WAVs to MP3 the other day. Finally found success after going through the Media menu instead of right clicking.
