somewhat thread-drifty...
...but that skeleton helmet reminds me of a tongue-in-cheek motogp helmet, this captures the eye-opening experience of braking from +350kph to 90kph on a motorcycle at the mugello circuit in italy: HOLY F*CK!!!

Women's Cross Country Team Sprint Finish
I have watched a lot of the cross country races. XC seems like the closest winter sport to cycling in terms of tactics. Here is today's historic finish, watch the whole race if you can.

The biathlon is also very interesting, I can not imagine what it is like to hit 5 targets the size of CDs after skiing a loop flat out.

biathlon target-sizes vary
laying/prone ~= golf-ball
standing/offhand ~= CD
distance is always 50m.
the rifle's sight uses an aperture sized so that if you keep the target "ball" centered in the sight, you'll hit the target -- not easy, but it's fairly simple in principle.
i shot smallbore in HS and college, we used similar rifles and sights. although the former were much heavier and only single shot.

While your HR and Respiratory rate are at 99% I'd point out. ;)
Breathing is pretty simple in principal too. At those rates, maybe not so much.

You've got the target sizes backward
From Wikipedia:
The target range shooting distance is 50 metres (160 ft). There are five circular targets to be hit in each shooting round. When shooting in the prone position, the target diameter is 45 millimetres (1.8 in); when shooting in the standing position, the target diameter is 115 millimetres (4.5 in).

Alpine ski racing
[quoteWhile her better event is snowboarding, she more than dabbles in skiing, but never placed higher than 29th in a world cup race.[/quote]
I watch most of the season-long World Cup Alpine racing for both the men & women, and for the record, Ester placed 17th in an FIS DH and 24th in a SG in Austria on consecutive days this past January and also placed 23rd in the Olympic GS. The woman has very solid Alpine race technique and can really bring it; she just doesn't do a lot of Alpine ski specialty training like the vast majority of the others do.
I don't believe Anna Veith was celebrating a win early; She is a humble person and knows better. It was NBC that declared the race was over and cut away to figure skating. IMO, the NBC producer has no clue how to cover a competitive Alpine ski race. It is not unusual for ski racing coverage to skip showing racers who are not expected to be competitive, but NBC has twice failed to show the first racer (#1 bib) when that person was a pre-race favorite for a medal and ended up being the first run leader. It is what it is and I still enjoy watching the racing.

I just can't get past the thought that this game was probably created by a bunch of bored drunks sliding frozen "cow pies" across a pond. I simply can't bring myself to take it seriously. The whole thing seems like a "Bob and Doug McKenzie" sketch.
Actually invented in Scotland at least 500 years ago, probably by guys looking for something you could do outside while drinking whisky, when it was too cold for golf.
I kind of enjoy it, myself. More than golf, which I find at least as ridiculous.

I guess it's inevitable...

curling is not to different from...

Golf isn't in the Olympics. At least not yet. Nor is bowling.
There're tons of recreational games that are quite enjoyable. But they're not in the Olympics.

CX before golf IMO. But I am bias. I always say, I never started gold because I played pool. Adding more distance than 9' and going beyond two dimensions was commitment I was never willing to embark upon. Although I did add the third dimension semi frequently, sometimes on purpose ;)

Yes...a memorable finish! Curious how the mass start dynamics on the big oval compare.

The ticker on the bottom of Sports Center this morning mentioned the US and two other biathlon teams were boycotting their worlds in Russia this year because no substantial anti-doping measures had been adopted by the Russian federation.
CX in the Winter Olympics is a winner.
Speaking of
winners:
USA Curling! Last to last to FIRST.

I didn't get the 1000m mass start in the coverage, pissed.
Also, seeing we paid for Ivanka to go to the Olympis did not bring and smile to my face either...

I see one skater with a big KIA logo on their thigh. I thought such was prohibited. Or do they get a pass for it being in the host country?

OK, question on the biathlon.
On the shooting portion, I was a manually loaded bullet for a missed shot. Only saw this on the relay.
So is the manually loaded retry of missed shots only for relay? I seem to have had trouble finding this rule. I did see up to 3 manually loaded retry to avoid the penalty loop for relay, but no mention other similar events.

mass start
The mass start long track races were great. Tactics similar to cycling--in fact the announcer kept calling the pack the "peloton" and saying things like "jump on her wheel." Great finish by the two winners! Man I wish we had a big oval in Maine. I love my short track club, but my body type is definitely more suited to long track.

biathlon -- extra rounds
correct, those extra rounds are available only on the relays.
relays have +3 rounds per string of 5 targets. spares must be loaded manually one-at-a-time if used (that's the penalty for taking them). when you run out of spares, then you start taking penalty laps for missed targets (even bigger penalty).
individual events go right to the penalty laps. i like the spare rounds option...should be available in all events.
