f*cking GERD again

i feel like some pathetic overweight middle aged fool.

i dont mind the stomach and swallowing discomfort, it's how it manifests in the back of my throat and sinus...coughing, stuffed up, etc...it's like i'm sick yet not.

Welcome to the Club!

POMAFs

Though I think I can say I'm not actually overweight (though I will not be confused with a natural climber). And I may have left middle age in the rear view mirror.

I've developed some GERD, which is quite uncomfortable, but it seems controlled with OTC Prilosec (Omeprazole). I tried Ranitidine, which was less effective.

this is my 2nd bout. prilosec-OTC last time (a few years ago) and started this time too.

for the non-GERD afflicted...you know how after vomiting one can have some lingering gastric detritus in one's throat and sinus, it's like that...constantly.

Yeah, it's an old fart's thing...

I used to have a pretty serious GERD problem that resulted in swallowing and choking issues requiring an upper endoscopy to re-open my damaged throat. I took Omeprezole for years until I learned recently that it can cause severe kidney problems. It can also lead to a "rebound effect" where your symptoms get even worse than they originally were when you stop taking it. Luckily, I was on a really low dose (10mg/day) so it probably did no harm. If you're just using it as necessary rather than daily, you should be OK, but I'd avoid long-term use.

Since changing jobs to one with dramatically less stress, GERD has been less of an issue, but it's not completely gone. Many days, I get a "heartburn" feeling after eating, but haven't had any actual reflux. Ranitidine helps, but as Dan said, it's nowhere near as effective. An occasional Tums kills the fire. I've also tried some natural remedies and deglycyrrhizinated licorice works somewhat and it tastes good. This is not the same as licorice candy, which can actually be detrimental. Drinking water helps as well and it's essentially free.

TTF=Terribly Tardy Fossils

What a bunch we are.

At 60, and I fear bragging like when you say I never flat, I am on no MEDs. I have no chronic shit to deal with beside the aches and pains from all the dumb shit I have done that seemed like good ideas at those times.

I am waiting for the hammer to fall...

Walter, I had a friend that had some esophagus condition in which his peristalsis would stop in a section. You want to talk about GERD? He had some surgical procedure which fixed it so he could eat a meal in less than 2 hours. I do not recall what that procedure was exactly, only that he could eat normally after having it.

Why am I not surprised Dan had experience with this. Dan is reminding me of Elaine's Mom, she had something like 20 MEDs she was on, she was text book almost everything...

On a lighter note, Elaine was dismissed from PT yesterday. She started work part time 4th week out doing more seated administrative scheduling and handling learning then training on a new scheduling system.

She scrubbed a case last week, and came home glowing. Standing in theater with no pain is not something she can remember. She is scrubbing cases today and Monday. Lighter ENT stuff, but well on her way. No orthopedic surgery like her hip replacement for a while though.

PPIs interfere with calcium absorption too.

GERD can be frustrating. The last time I got it the pattern followed the Starbucks dark roast selection of the day, an easy fix. Before that Aciphex in the AM.

At the Rx follow up there were still symptoms.
"Do you take it with your morning coffee?"
--Yes
"Do you put cream in your coffee?"
--Yes
"That's enough protein to trigger acid production. Take it with water and wait a half-hour."

Yeah, stop dairy for a while and cross your fingers.

Are you lactose intolerant, or becoming? Free internet diagnosis worth the price. ;)

i *think* this event...

...was caused by strict calorie restriction (trying to lose some lbs) and eating a banana 1st thing in the morning on a very-very empty stomach followed by an active/stressful workday. felt "not right" and got worse thru the day.

coffee and banana? I just got a splash thinking about that.

We have geriatric juice in the fridge. Ensure and the likes, there are multiple formulas with different levels of nutrient and calories. No time/desire for food in the morning, guzzle one before hitting the bricks. The heavier calorie varieties have a appetite suppression effect as well.

ignore any stigma of old fartness.
