OK, that was cool

Literally, it turned to 9:30 pm visually for about a minute and 1/2 here at the house. It got somewhat cool for the duration as a well.

We did drive into the total zone, which is 6 miles south of us. But Elaine was getting too much pain coming on. She had a total hip Wednesday, so she is in that club With Dan now. Although he has his own special club, so I told Elaine no ice skating...

During the start the light was really cool, I found visual contrast was greatly enhanced.

Good luck to Elaine

As she knows, outcomes from total hips are generally very good, and it's definitely an easier recovery than a femur fracture!

She is walking with cane already, PT in PACU, then again on Friday 48hours post OP, unreal! Tissue discomfort from the surgery is what is the most discomfort/pain. But she is not even taking the oxy after day 3.

But her pain from the joint pre surgery was a constant level 5-6/10 when it was at the lowest. By the end of a long day, she was 9-9/10, a few days a week.

So with actual hip pain gone, her average pain level is usually 3/10 after a day of surgery.

Although we left our viewing place before the total when she said she was hitting a 6. We where 10-12 minutes from the house. The chair she chose to sit in was a no go, but it was too late before she realized.

They cut though no muscle with her procedure which is a newer one she said. But a lot of yanking and banking as you well know. The incision site is about 5", which amazes me.

Ice on the incision site seem to be the best remedy, which is awesome.

I was so impressed by the team at her surgery center she cherry picked. The amount of her fellow surg/partners attention in PACU was unreal. I have partied sporadically with these folks for a few years. I did not really grasp the level of regard for my wife. I thought that was only me. ;)

Sounds good

Yes you definitely like to have good surgeons, and I've also been lucky that way.

This must be my year for surgeries, had an adrenal gland out 2 weeks ago, a parathyroid gland comes out in another 2. They're overhauling my endocrine system. Everything should be fine, either or both procedures may address the cause of osteoporosis I have, along with some slightly aberrant labwork. Fortunately I have the same surgeon for both who is very good. Any surgery gives you something to think about though (and recover from).

Tell Elaine to be a good girl and do her therapy.

"Tell Elaine to be a good girl and do her therapy."

She is a whole lot more structured than I. ;) Although I take my physicality as serious as most here as a cyclist.

She is already asking me to put her Madone on the CT. Her next PT will include some stationary cycle, and with some good results then [we hope] she can start on the CT. We started walking up the street yesterday, Sunday. 100 yards and return, cane. The walker last used on PT day 2 days post op. Thus so far so good.

She has not ridden the bike due to pain since 2015. I in fact sold the Tandem early this year. She prefers the Madone, sez I never stop pedaling. ;O

I did not really talk much about it prior, but the relief level is sprouting now in spades.

I liked the Tandem due to higher average speeds. Solo bikes together tries my patience. I am getting slow enough as time goes by...

I took them from my driveway. They look a bit grainy because I sent the lower quality ones to walter so I didn't crush his email box.

BTW, I am doing well. Though the docs told me Friday, no more exercising in the heat. My running at noon in SC this summer is not doing my kidney much good.

creatinine level is 1.7 eGFR 58. 1.7 is about .4 higher than they would like.

Great pics

Hey Erik, I heard of someone traveling to SC to view the eclipse and thought we might be hearing from you, with your interest in astrophysics. On the PBS News Hour they interviewed an astronomy professor from my college (who was actually there when I was) who has viewed 60+ of them.

Glad to hear you're doing well after the surgery - I'm sure it's a process. As I posted I just had a mini-version where they took out an adrenal gland (which is located on top of the kidney). Now they have to figure out if the other adrenal gland is working. Hope your daughter is doing well also.

Dan - Does that mean you will only get half the usual adrenaline rush?

Adrenaline rushing

Good question, that remains to be seen. The other adrenal gland may produce the normal levels, or it may have been suppressed if the bad gland was overproducing. That will be determined by further tests, in the meantime I'm taking hydrocortisone. So I may or may not have to take supplements. If it was overproducing, that may have caused osteoporosis, which may also be caused by high parathyroid hormone levels I have, which is why a parathyroid gland is coming out.

My case is so complicated that my endocrinologist presented it at a symposium of peers!

I know you were joking and not looking for detailed information, but I figure it may hold some interest as lots of cyclists have osteoporosis and I am apparently a textbook case as to possible causation.

They took the gland with my kidney. I do think it had an effect on my mood and excitability.

I was stoic before and more so now.

In fact, one of the side affects of kidney donation is depression and I had to see a shrink before the surgery to look for signs of it.

Stoicism

I probably don't need to be any more stoic either....

Remains to be seen how all this will shake out.

More thread drift....

Coincidentally, recently a relative's teenage son (elite level soccer & hockey player and quasi-daily intense training) had a blood test and was found to have high creatinine levels.
Not the same medical scenarios as Eric or Dan, however it may be of some interest to the rest of us....
Did a quick search and sent them these 3 references:

- 2nd reference: Seems Creatinine can temporarily increase in certain high intensity level athletes ( e.g. Rugby, soccer). Lots of graphs.

- Diet can influence it too (e.g. lots of red meats, protein supplements)

- Dehydration / lots of sweating also (obviously - since creatinine level is a biomarker of  kidney function)

- The 3rd reference suggested repeated blood testing after a rest / sedentary period of a few days - while drinking lots/adequate levels of water, and refraining from red meats, and other protein supplementation - just to see if it modifies the creatinine level.

However, apparently they all seemed to imply not to become obsessively worried about it (for young , otherwise healthy, elite level athletes).

http://www.emedicinehealth.com/script/main/mobileart-emh.asp?articlekey=129732

ps. On a somewhat related note: CK levels are traditionally known to also often much higher in avid weightlifters, runners.

However, after Zwifting intensely x 2 months (no weights/no running), this past winter/spring - my CK levels were significantly elevated. Doctor asked I rest x 1wk and retest. I did. It went back to normal
(High CK is a biomarker of muscle damage and red flag for various myopathies/muscular dystrophies)

pss.Good luck and prompt healing to: Eric , Dan and Sparky's wife

While we're being erudite

Technically what I have a bit too much of from the adrenal gland is cortisol - you need some but definitely don't want an excess. There was a cyst (benign) on the bad gland that they thought might be overproducing.

This is an education on stuff I knew nothing about. I'm not greatly concerned but I'm glad I know something about it now. Thanks for the good wishes.

Don't think so

No one has mentioned Addison's but google says it is a deficiency of cortisol while I have a bit more than normal. A condition associated with excess cortisol is Cushing's Syndrome but I don't have the symptoms of that other than the osteoporosis. My lack of symptoms makes this somewhat confusing for the docs. It may be that the cyst was more or less leaking cortisol, and with it out, the other gland may or may not produce the normal amount. But in any case, I am told the level can be regulated.

OK, my memory had that backwards. So your backup gland is over producing. Hopefully it will settle into doing it's job solo and properly. You are sure having too much fun this year...

not exactly

They think the bad gland was overproducing, and in some cases that suppresses the other gland so it does not produce. But you don't know that until the bad gland is out and you see what happens. Which is where we are now. I'm taking hydrocortisone for a couple weeks, then more labs to see what the remaining gland is doing. If it's not producing or underproducing, I take a supplement.

This doesn't stop any fun, have an all day kayaking class Sunday.

Well, best luck and possible wishes/outcome from our castle to yours!

Elaine, now a week out is progressing.. well progressively. ;) Once we got her intake of good nutrition back to normal, she daily show improvements. Second PT tomorrow, hope the stationary cycle goes well in PT. Glad I still have Computrainers, although one at this point is backup CT and not up and running...

Who knows, maybe this winter we can do the dual CTs again and come out in 2018 with her actually using her Madone. It has cob webs on it at this point.

OK, here is some bone candy for the TTF, the bits removed. ;)
