Garmin Connect IQ apps
For anyone who has a Garmin that can take IQ apps, someone has released an interesting data field app named AppBuilder (go to
https://apps.garmin.com/en-US
and search for "appbuilder"). You can enter formulas into it to define your own data fields, and it can also write this data to the Garmin FIT file that the device records. Description and documentation here:
https://forums.garmin.com/forum/developers/connect-iq/connect-iq-showcase/1227689-data-field-appbuilder
I used it to create gradient and max gradient fields that record to the FIT file, so that when developing routes for other users I can look at the route uploaded to Garmin Connect and see the gradient at various points along the route.
My Garmin 1000 does have its own built-in gradient field, but it a) doesn't record to the FIT file and so doesn't appear in the ride details when uploaded to Garmin Connect, and b) doesn't record the maximum gradient encountered.
p.s. The formulas I used were:
Gradient (I set this on one of the 1000 screens alongside the built-in gradient field, and the two track very closely): (altitude_raw - PREVD(altitude_raw, 50)) / (distance_raw - PREVD(distance_raw, 50)) * 100
Max gradient: enclose the previous formula inside MAX()
