Dick is an absolute treasure

He's a terrific personality and ambassador for cycling, and just a genuine gentleman. He was announcing my races back in the '70's and is still at it today. He just seems ageless and timeless. Great guy!

A classic indeed

Dick is a great guy. He called the Yarmouth Clam Festival race for years, and actually interviewed me once after I won a lame veterans citizen race at the Concord Crit.

I also once sat at a lunch table with him at Sugarloaf Mtn, when he was a calling a nat xc ski championship. I mentioned I had ridden Mt Washington when he was there interviewing Jeannie Longo and Genevieve Jeanson. He immediately asked what my time was and pretended to be impressed (trust me it as not impressive).

As to racing against horses, the great book Hearts of Lions describes the late Ted Smith of Buffalo (nat road champ, and won a EuroPro race in the early '50s) racing against a harness racing rig in Canada. Ted said he raced from the front because he was afraid the horse would bite him if he came around.
