Shimano 105 Experience

The frame of my aluminum Bianchi Mega Pro has a crack on the downtube and it is time to move on. The bike is equipped with Dura Ace 7700 9 speed. I now ride about 1500 miles a year versus the 5 to 6k when I raced. In the price range that I am thinking about most of the bikes are equipped with 105 11 speed. I am looking for some input on the 105 grouppo. Thanks

I've heard multiple people say that 11 speed 105 rides indentical to Dura Ace and the groups are available from the U.K. Sellers for less than $500. I would not be afraid of it at all.

"Dura Ace 7800 9 speed"

7800=10s 7700=9s

I just installed a total 5800 [105 11s] Group on the Project One Madone frameset my friend got after I got mine.

It is GS rear derailleur, 11-28 [can do 11-32] and a 34/50 front Ultegra Crankset. So total 5800 group with 6800 cranks.

My comments would be:

All the Shimano 11S cranksets [including with 10s use] are the best shifting crankset/front shifting I have experienced to date.

5800/105, about the only things I could say is the shifters feels plasticy and cheap to me. And the big chainring has a poor design IMO in that there are major places inboard that could hold a lot of road grime. And they are heavier than Ultegra already. Add some grime and 1/4 lb more I see happening.

I have Microshift 10s on my Madone [with 10s] and the 105 feels less solid to me shifter wise. Which could mean exactly nothing.

The new brake pull ratio and calipers give better brakes IMO, noticeably so over previous versions.

Considering Merlins prices, I see no way 5800/105 is not a win win win.

Shimano 105 5800 11 Speed Groupset Black
$368.95

And for about 200.00 more & a 1/2 lb less:

Shimano Ultegra 6800 Groupset
$579.74

BTW: If you have ST-7700 STI 9 speed shifters:

Note that the 11 speed shifters are bigger and have about 1 CM more reach. So if you are doing bars or stem, adjust with shorter reach bars or a shorter stem.

If you are using old bars now and get new bars you should pay attention to the sorter reach bar across the board as compared to even 6-7 years ago.

My Last two carbon bras are 65 and 75mm reach. circa 2000-2008 maybe average 100-110mm. Point being check.

The shorter bar reach of a new bar and bigger/longer [over 7700 9s] STIs reach are semi cross canceling. ;)

Sparky I think you should discuss the reach of your carbon bras in a difeent forum....

Listen Bra... I used to have kevlar bras, now crabon. ;)

On that note: I test rode the Di2 Bra mounted Climber SW-600 switch. That is one touchy set of switches. [one unit two button/switches] You can't forget to get your finger off after you push/shift or 1st bump you shift it again. ;)

But I can clearly see I am going to like that a lot!

I put a 5800 full group on a Chinese carbon build last summer. It wasn't as cheap as Merlins as I substituted the cassette for an Ultegra 11-23, which is not available in 105.

It shifts much better then my 10 spd. Ultegra stuff for sure. The front shift is especially a standout, just perfect and with a light action.

I thought long and hard about Ultegra Di2, but at over $1200, with 5800 at around $400...... got wheels instead with the money saved.

5800 cranks showing all the little caverns to collect grime in. ;)

6800 no such crevice on the big ring.

My Scott Addict got some 5800 cranks, and I got some 6800 chainrings. So changing from a 36/52 to 34/50 and 'better' level chainrings. I did not notice any performance difference FWIW.
