Anybody tinker with a Raspberry Pi?

Seems like a cheap media server for Plex for similar is doable.

Would somebody translate this for me? Or at least dumb it down?

Wouldn't an outdated smart phone still outperform one of these mini-pc thingies?

Not sure about the I/o limitations and higher-level interface constraints, but even an old smartphone would seem to pack a lot of power at very low cost IF you can tap into it from whatever side is needed for an application.
I read it yesterday, and I'm no computer hobbyist, so can't remember whether the article even mentioned whether people were connecting these cards to a regular full-size monitor, or what the end user was after.

r-pi is open

designed to be a modded gizmo with USB ports, various connections, extensible memory, etc. and a community that exists to make these things into god-knows-what for experimentation/innovation.

old androids smartphones are more closed/dead-end systems and iphones are even more closed than that.

once an r-pi gets modded to a point where someone wants to make a more turn-key application for a specific purpose, then you can go to an OEM and create whatever customized r-pi derived gizmo that might very well end up similar to an old smartphone hardware.
