OT: really close to punting on linux

only have it on 1 machine right now, my 5 year old quad-core tower.

i was running an old/unsupported version of ubuntu, 10.10, and did a wipe/migration to Lubuntu 14.04LTS and something just aint right. after installing, it works fine -- i'm happy. then i do some cleanup of unwanted apps, basic stuff, and the system no longer boots! i've done a rewipe/reload a handful of times and it persists...

i'm getting too old to burn time getting an OS to work. there was a time when i'd enjoy geeking out, getting an old machine dialed in so that linux screams, but not anymore...

i have win8 on the rest of my machines and it's rock-solid -- it flat works.

Of course you don't want to hear it but

Try a Mac of some type. Remember I have run Ubuntu and other builds and liked them but I like not having to mess with the machine to get it right.

Sure my MBA memory shit the bed and everything was fixed by Apple, it has been fine since and I have not had to mess with anything. I just turn it on and go. That has not been the case with M$ or Linux stuff. I am pretty geeky guy as you well know.

Wipe the thing completely. And install 14.04 from scratch. It should work fine.

I use Linux for teaching. But for real work, I use a Mac.

i did the wipe! every time!

the problem seems to accrue when i de-install some of the bundled applications...apparently one of them breaks the OS (on my machine, at least).

i'm going thru cycles of trying to ID exactly which action breaks the OS. i change something, test reboot, snap an image of the OS, change something else, test reboot, etc, etc.

good times.

no macs for me. no way. good stuff, but i cant go there for philosophical and practical reasons. maybe i'll give linux-mint a go!

Best wishes, supporting Linux is expensive, your time or your money. Instead of uninstalling them, make the ridiculous number of programs that do the same thing poorly disappear. They don't load, they just get in the way. I have a low opinion of most included software because they are inevitably idiosyncratic. Occasionally something turns up that does exactly what I want it to do. That said, I really like open source repositories for simple direct tools.

Look for things to comment away in
/usr/share/menu/
/usr/lib/menu/
/etc/menu/
~/.menu/

Ironic isn't it?

The free open source solution intimidates users with its complexity, and justifies expense.

A big hard bargaining outfit is named micro-soft.

The company that sells the most expensive stuff does it with fruit and rainbows.

Me, too

I've been down that road before with Linux (Linpus version). I would remove a seemingly innocuous thing like the Thai language pack for Open Office from the GUI control panel and the operating system would be crippled on the next boot up.

back in business

i uncovered a bug in the bundled Lubuntu Install Center application. when uninstalling the application in question using install center, it would break the OS. when i uninstalled using the normal synaptic tool, it worked fine.

system is all sorted now, apps installed and tuned, and it's SCORCHING FAST!!! still have a problem with virtualbox, but that's not a problem with the OS.

Nice UI/Desktop. I have always liked Ubuntu's desktop.

Desktop? I have a rotating slide show in W8 that has every awesome picture I have taken, some taken personally, and some as in stolen off the internats of course. Not to mention a shortcut to a script file on the desktop which switches to the next one. ;)

Example is the current one, the rocket residual of the last shuttle take of Cape Canaveral. :) And below the previous one before it swapped out.

That cano is not asleep, note the lava dome. You can see it venting from the Johnson Ridge Observatory should you visit... Some day with the naked eye, other days you nee binos.

The Space Shuttle shot has a little back story. Elaine and I returned from a cruise and back in port you could see the tower from the highest points on the ship. Unfortunately the lift off was going to be the next day, and we had a plane to catch. But courtesy of the internets I found the shot I would have loved to have taken myself.

Background pics are cool and all.

I like Ubuntu's UI, the way walter has it set up he is running it sorta Mac like. It is very clean. I don't like the MS start menu or the new tile set up. Having pull downs as a constant UI for all applications and the desktop is nice. My brain just goes the same place each time.

"Wow, any idea where you got that shuttle shot?"

Probably just image searching, which I do time to time looking for something specific which I usually don't find, but see other great stuff to take. ;)

Suffice to say I do a lot of 'right click / save as" on the internets. ;)

DL my 800x600 of it if you like: http://coupekiss.host-ed.me//images/ttf/4-anhourlater.jpg

BTW: I have several Hi Res Nebula shot. Just do a Google search specifying 'large' pics and see what you like. Also the 'get lucky' google choice can have interesting results

I understand 'because', it is a very cool shot to be sure.

Note that I did not post the huge pics in the thread due to size. ;)

On the shots I posted I actually did a screen cap and pasted into 'paint' to make a nice small one as to not post a big pic. Some of mine are crazy huge, probably slow down my PC using them for a rotating desktop slide show. But probably the most work my Quad Core does really...

I know, I know, but sometimes you just have to go large!

Thanks for the compliment, sometimes you get lucky with the light. The morning Sun really found its mark.

3rd layer?

I use vbox on my mac and run Ubuntu inside it. That'd be 2 layers?

Well, now i have upgraded to a higher res version. ;)

Here is one I took at sunrise out the back of my house in TN. The shot called me lighting wise.

3rd layer, remote access to guest OS

client OS = windows, VM server OS = linux, VM guest OS = windows

i run my VM guest OSes as a "headless" daemon...so i can access from any machine on my home network via VNC or RDP.

"i love it when i get a system dialed in"

I used to, back in 1994-2000 when I got paid $90.00 hr for doing it. Now, I'd rather be doing anything with a bike instead. ;) I am Full of shit of course, I screw with and diddle setups continually. Windows 10 not landed here yet even though reservation confirmed for quite while.

I do prefer using unix based disk partition utilities when things get nastified to that level.

Very nice Sparky. Hope you get some more shots like that.

BTW, I trimmed down the published photo, it really was overkill.

Thanks, did you see the one I posted in July from our jaunt out to the Pacific?
I liked that one myself, in my desktop slide show as well.

One day I will get a real camera maybe...
