Club-mate killed
By a DUI driver, in broad daylight.
Though not a close friend, we rode in groups many times. Shared beer and laughter post ride a few times too.
This is second time in 3 years someone I know personally were hit and killed by driver.
Infinite sadness.

A reminder on how vulnerable and unprotected we are against a car. Be careful

His face and hearty laughter flash in my mind's eyes from time to time. His love of life infectious to those around him. Hard to comprehend he's now gone.
He's in his early 60's, still very much full of life. Taken away too soon.
Such a senseless lose.

Consider moving?
(Shocking news. Sorry to hear of another senseless bicycle tragedy.)

How would that solve anything?
Cyclists get killed by motorists everywhere. Two young kids on bikes were run down in Boston yesterday; one is dead and the other is in the hospital. Until this is treated by the legal system as the serious crime that it is and people are routinely given stiff jail sentences, it's going to continue. Even that won't prevent all vehicular cyclist homicides.

Moving...
To where?
I know what you're getting at though. Proliferation of pot holes & DUI drivers, it isn't quite the cycling haven I thought it was when I first moved here. Or perhaps it never was any better, I'm justgetting the reality check after living here long enough

Of course not. Like the death penalty doesn't really prevent murders...
April gets it.
When I worked for a summer and a winter at IBM Hawthorne a long time ago, I didn't enjoy my time in Westchester County. Narrow roads, sometimes twisty, lots of busy people driving VERY fast. I can think of way safer places to ride but perhaps they're not practical for April.
(And if you get close to Yonkers, very nasty riding indeed.)

My heart goes out to his family, friends and acquaintances.
Commentary:
Add 'distracted driving' to under-the-influence penalties. The promise of self-driving vehicles sounds better and better. (But during the Belmont Stakes coverage a Mercedes self-driving commercial bragged about 10K miles of road testing. I was underwhelmed.) Today I witnessed a U-turn near miss (of my car) and the driver immediately had to swerve to miss a baby carriage. Around Springfield (Bethesda actually) the conflicting sense of entitlement of drivers and pedestrians is growing y=x*x.

Twisty roads can be great fun, had it not for people driving fast on them!
Similarly, narrow roads, especially tree lined, provides shades in hot summer days. Not to mention colorful in spring and fall. But again, that don't mix well with people driving fast.
Moreover, many of those roads are now littered with pot holes the county/town didn't have money to fill...

I too,, can think of many SAFER places to ride. But those places aren't necessarily "better" place to ride (or live, for that matter).

The driver will likely be charged for vehicular manslaughter.
It won't bring the victim back though. Such a senseless lost.
