The smell is very dependent on weather and tide conditions, and they've done a very good job of cleaning up the lagoon so that it's less of a problem than it used to be. They've made some improvements without making them too obvious.
I remember my first time in Venice - 1986 - we had to carry flashlights at night to find our way around. Now, they have streetlights. But they look like they've been there forever . . .
