Richmond 2015

Yes they do and they are making big plans. They are also hosting the collegiate nationals next year (2014). For the UCI championships they expect:

Racers 1,000
Support Staff 592
Accredited Officials 6,000
Journalists 1,000
Onsite Spectators 452,580

They will produce 400 hours of worldwide television, with 300 million worldwide television viewers.

The spectator projection is very specific.

What happens if you're unfortunate enough to be the 452,581th potential onsite spectator.

That estimate of number of spectators is way over the top. If we assume the circuit is 15km/lap, then 452,580 works out to 30 spectators for every metre of the course. Even if you split that number of spectators evenly across the five days of competition (hardly likely, the majority of spectators will be there on the Sunday), that's still six spectators for every metre of the course each day.

There was even plenty of room at Worlds in Florence. That may be the total for the entire week, maybe.

Data source

Yeah, those numbers were supplied to Richmond2015 by the UCI. We all know the infallibility of the UCI. I just pasted them in but the 5 significant figure spectator estimate is quite the laugh.

Cool.

Richmond is a fun place to visit. For a small city, there's a lot of off-beat entertainment, funky neighborhoods and interesting restaurants. Might have to make plans for that.

I went to the men's race at the Hamilton worlds, with my two sons (then 16 and 19). We walked the entire 11-mile circuit during the race. Had a great time.

I think I know the location of at least one of those cobbled climbs they mentioned, in the old river port district of Shockoe Bottom. Very picturesque.

Cool +1

Richmond is very nice, and has a scale I think might be pretty manageable for an event like that. I was down there about a job once long ago and was put up at by far the fanciest hotel I've ever stayed at. The gracious South, I guess. John mentions Shockoe, I think I remember Shockoe Slip, or something like that.

Hope it's not too hot on raceday.

Count me in

I will plan to be one of those spectators. I have never attended a Cycling Worlds and it's only a 2.5-hr drive for me. I visited there in 2007 for long course duathlon Worlds and had a decent time.

Richmond has chops

In 2011 Richmond was one of seven cities worldwide to host a selection of Picasso's work from the Musée National Picasso, Paris.

I turned the corner and saw something I'd always wanted to see in person:

"Bull's Head"

Shockoe Slip and Shockoe Bottom are adjoining neighborhoods, and now that I think about it, the cobble section that I was thinking of is in Shockoe Slip (East Cary Street).[/img]

Charlottesville is one of my favorite places, and I'll be staying there and commuting to Richmond. Not to let the cat out early, but there is an excellent B&B service there that rents houses, I have a particular 3br that'd I've stayed in before for about 1k for an extended weekend, so split with a 3rd couple that'd be way cheap, and its walking distance to the Main Street in C'vill-now closed to traffic and a restaurant haven. Keep it in mind.

I hope to make it to Richmond as well, who knows when this chance will come up again.
I hope that I don't turn out to be the 452,581th person to show up.

overlooking the blue ridge parkway.

i missed the '86 worlds in boulder and swore i'd never make that mistake again. so made it to hamilton in '03 and now i'm committed to being at richmond in '15!

Certainly there'd be something nice about a cabin in the woods, but isn't that like 90 miles away? Lotta schleppin'.

Personally, I think it would be more fun to stay closer to town and enjoy the night life. Richmond has some fun spots.

Whatever suits your taste, obviously.

Hotel Info

Watch where you make reservations for Hotels. There are some sketchy areas, avoid the airport hotels at all costs!

Before you reserve a hotel, I can yea or nay it for you if you'd like.....
