Taking the bait

There's an old (probably apocryphal) story from the '70s about a University of Michigan law student who funded some portion of his education by placing a very high end racing bike in the center of the university quad and waited for someone to steal it. He then approached the thief with a camera, noted that he had committed grand larceny because of the value of the bike, and offered to not take the thief's picture and give it to the police if the thief would pay him $50 (about $300 in today's money).

Although it could be argued that this was clear entrapment, the story goes that none of the bike thieves ever chose to file suit. True or not it makes a good story.
