Unusual tyre failure

Sitting at coffee after this mornings ride, and a loud bang from outside (scared the shit out of a dog that someone had parked outside next to the bikes) indicated a blowout on someone's bike. When we had a look after finishing coffee, it initially looked like the bead had blown off the rim. However, a closer look showed the bead still sitting in its correct place on the rim, and that the casing had come unglued from itself and unwrapped from the bead. First time I've seen that particular failure.

The tyre was a fairly new Veloflex Corsa 23.

I'm begining to wonder about Veloflex

Linda had a tire (it may have been the same model and size) that the tread started to peel off. We contacted the importer who agreed to cover it under warranty, but was out of stock at the time. Periodic emails over the few months went unanswered and they have permanently lost us as a customer. There's nothing exceptional about their tires and certainly no justification to put up with suspect quality and poor service, considering the variety of the other tires on the market with comparable performance and excellent service.

The described failure and the problem we had are risks of hand-made tires. All it takes is a less than perfect gluing job.

That said, the bead failure is what I would expect if the tire was overinflated.

Michelin Axial Pros

I've had several Axial Pros (a low point in Michelin tire history I feel) divorce casing from tread. I guess they're machine made.

I had a couple of Kenda "Konstrictor" 700-23 road tires whose tread cracked away from the casing. The first failure came after about 3200 miles as a rear tire and it was at the replacement point anyway so I wasn't that concerned. However, another one failed in 800 miles as a front tire and that discarded all of them.

I had that happen with a set of Made in Thailand, Vittorias. I stopped purchasing Vittorias after that.
