Recommendation: Disposal of good used parts

My daughter took up bike commuting and soon thereafter was struck by a car. She is alright, recovering from knee surgery, the PT has just released her. She can't wait to get back riding.

Her bike is a total loss though. It's an early 90's Trek 330, made in Taiwan. The frame and wheels are no good, the whole stem-mounted 6 speed SIS drive train and the rest of the parts appear to be fine.

Does anyone have suggestions for donating the parts? She plans to turn the frame into art.

Co-Op?

Is there a bike co-op nearby? They would be happy to have any usable parts you are willing to give them. I once donated a complete older MTB that I had no use for to one near me.

For parts with some value, a FS posting on Craig's List has worked well too.

Ouch.

Sorry to hear of the accident. I second the co-op idea, and if there isn't one of those, there may be a bike shop that take care of problems for low-income cyclists.

+3

Around here there is a progaram that rehabs bikes for low income kids, and also trains/employs troubled kids as mechanics. I think there are more and more innovative projects that incorporate the virtues of bikes and cycling. You might check at an LBS or bike advocacy group for any such local groups.

+1 on that

Here in Boston we have a group Bikes not Bombs:

They accomplish three neat things, they get old bikes out of the waste stream recycling by teaching low income kids how to repair the bikes each earning a bike in the process and sends the refurbished bikes to countries that can use them.... https://bikesnotbombs.org/

-Offer them to users here for a donation to the TTF.

-Put ad on Craigs list with terms of sale a paid receipt to any, or a charity of your choice for agreed upon price.

Personally, I like the Bikes not Bombs idea.

They're from a 1990 base model Trek, the 330.

Any takers?

I'm waiting for a reply from my old buddy Larry Black at Mt. Airy / College Park Bicycles / bike123.com
