LOL. I love it! Actually my old rear rack with a pack did much the same thing.

I still have a few MTB duck bill flaps you mount to the seatpost.

A photo taken many years ago - my bike after riding through melting snow on fire trails. The components pretty much date the photo - Campagnolo Rally rear derailleur, Stronglight 49D crankset, Campagnolo quill pedals, 5-speed freewheel, TA waterbottles. There was so much mud that the fenders were acting a bit like a piping bag, squirting the mud out sideways as I was riding along. The friend I was riding with that day *didn't* have fenders, and although he probably had less rolling resistance, I've seldom seen anyone look more miserable at the end of a bike ride, with a thick layer of half-frozen muddy slurry stuck to his legs and back and backside.

Sounds like the photos I've see at the finish line of almost any Belgian cyclocross race.

On our winter group rides
On our winter group rides hereabouts fenders AND mud flaps in winter are mandatory... a strict tight double paceline with frequent rotations to have everyone get to talk to everyone else during the ride, the ride is led by an ex national champion who refers to fenders such as those as F U fenders as you may be covered but whoever is behind you is not...

Rim eating conditions, rear anyway. Can't touch the front brake in that shit.
I trashed the rear Mavic on my MTB on one ride. That wheel is on the Stumpjumper and has a ceramic rim since. Front rim is original mid 90s.
YMRMMV

Yeah, but those guys aren't out there all day in their muddy race clothing gradually getting colder. The race lasts about an hour and then they can change and warm up.

Never had real fenders before moving to PDX. Now all my bikes have them.
