OT: Should I throw out an old radar detector?

I am in the process of moving and I found my old Escort radar detector from the 80's. is there any use for it, or is it obselete?

Hate to say it but it's really not worth anything these days...hell even a 5 year old Valentine has surprisingly little value.

Threw mine out not to long ago. Maybe search ebay to see what they are going for?

Obsolete

With the newer instant-on radar, different radar bands, lasers, etc. the technology has gone way beyond what that detector will see. All it's good for these days is a doorstop.

Around here, it mostly seems to be aircraft enforcement, against which a radar detector won't help.

It's been about 31 years now since I've received a speeding citation.

Drive carefully.

Get a mortar tube and shoot the thing at the Cessna taking pictures and sending tickets...

Are you implying dddd knows how to acquire a mortar tube?

(joke, but I like the sentiment!)

Mortar tube would be as useless as the radar detector.

These days at the cost of gas, I don't drive too fast. Furthermore my need for speed was fulfilled for a lifetime by 5 years of the autobahn.

As crazy as it may seem but my bike really fulfills the desired rush for speed just fine.

For me, it wasn't the rush of speed but rather the need to get some place far away a few minutes (ok, 30 min) earlier.

Though these days, the speed limits are reasonably realistic and "herd speed" plenty fast enough for that purpose in most condition (often times too fast for condition). So I have no need to speed ahead of the herd. No need for gizmo to avoid getting speeding tickets.

I hardly go over the speed limit anymore. Seem to have removed the hustle&bustle outta driving.

OTOH, I also attempt to make my loops in less time on the bike. Nothing to do with getting to the end sooner. Just add mini loops to the loops instead of ending the ride sooner. ;) I am sure I am preaching to the choir as well...

different in my case

Riding satisfies my need for slowness.

Getting old...

I'm stunned by the average speeds these days. I usually drive about 5 mph over the limit. It's a fairly safe margin that typically won't attract the attention of the police. But at that speed I'm one of the slowest vehicles on the highway. There's a non-stop stream of people blowing by me.

I was afraid to word it exactly like that. ;O

I confess being one of those blowing by you...

I do more like 10-15mph over limit and still got passed often enough!

With most people going limit-5 (law binding) to limit+15 (people like me), the speed differential of going even faster than that (delta > 20 mph) is really too great for me to feel safe.

+1

And the lack of right lane discipline in the US is totally ridiculous. Driving on highways in western Europe is so much nicer in this respect.

My biggest peeve, along with no-signal lane-changers, are the speeders who use the slow lane instead of the fast lane.
They deserve every ticket they can/can't afford imo.

So much would be solved if people would just leave 5 minutes earlier or more.
I did this early in my sales career to arrive early for appointments....most people seem to budget for the amount of time to get somewhere with optimal conditions and when the slightest thing goes wrong, they solve it by breaking the law, resorting to speeding and/or reckless, rude driving.
My hour commute into Charlotte had me seeing everything from drivers peeking under sun visor mirrors as they applied cosmetics going 70 mph, drivers reading the newspaper at speed, and of course the drivers who are busy drinking, eating, texting, knee driving with a coffee in one hand and a egg mcstuffin in the other, etc....oh, but never too occupied to prevent laying on the horn to give someone an audible fuck you first thing in the morning.
What a commentary....that part of the rat race I am glad to have literally put in my rear view mirror.

I originally purchased it after getting caught in a speed trap, and used it for a short while. I have not used it in 20 years and had no idea if someone might want it. My vehicle won't even go the speed limit now.

Speeders are forced into the merge lane to get around the Geo Metro pacing the semi-trailer in lanes #1 and #2.

That's "the lack of right lane discipline."

I found the radar detector enabling, I was speeding more with it. I did have good luck with the ones I was using working, Bels usually.

I use a lot less gas and brake/rotors anymore. ;)

Some American drivers haven't even heard of the phrase "right lane discipline"!

I kid you not. I once had a driver "advice" me to drive on the left most lane because there's less debris on that lane. He proceeded to drive "safely" at 5 mile BELOW speed limit on the passing lane.

When concrete interstate highways were first built, the left lane was restricted to automobiles, no trucks, less damage, especially in the winter freeze-thaw. That might be before your time driving in the US though.

As far as I can tell most of them have been paved over with asphalt.

But bad habits are hard to break for some drivers, even after 20 years.
