That's been discussed a fair bit on the BOB list, and it also put me in mind of the Schlumpf device, which is a BB replacement with internal gearing. Kind of obviates the problem of not having a nice rear wheel and/or of needing a wheel replacement and not having one with the internal gearing. The Schlumpf also does away with any electronics or cables--it's activated by a set of mechanical pushbuttons on the ends of the BB--kick right (IIRC) for high gear, left for low.

Still and all, technology marches on!

It's interesting and I can see it gaining acceptance at the recreational/enthusiast level. I'd consider it on a gravel bike, fat bike or MTB, which is all it will fit at the moment unless you get a custom road bike.

However, the loss of efficiency in the low range is likely to keep it from being widely accepted by the pros.
