End of an era

Don't know the specifics, Sonny (the owner) is getting up there in years and given Harris's specialty in mail order parts which was a huge supplement to their physical retail store (and with Sheldon Brown pioneer on the internet I might add) it must have been a real hit with the shortage of parts due to COVID supply chain shortages.....

I hope someone hosts Sheldon Browns stuff. Be a shame if it gets lost.

FWIW, I sent an email to Adventure Cycling Association, the bike advocacy organization, to ask if ACA were interested in taking on the Sheldon Brown site.

Sheldon's site
Pretty sure his widow is maintaining the site.
As for Harris, it's sad to see them go. I visited (kind of Sheldon Brown memorial visit) shortly after we moved to Connecticut. But it's a hard time to be a shop; I visited Devil's Gear this weekend, and they are doing all the service work they can handle, but are very short on parts, and are having trouble getting new bikes.

Thought of Sheldon last week
I have never really been into the technical weeds where Sheldon lurked, but I did enjoy some of his stuff. Last week I had the pleasure of having some dental work done where the dentist uses basically a tiny Allen key. I asked if this was a torque wrench, and he said yes and gave me the Newton-cm or whatever. I was tempted to use Sheldon’s term “Dork Wrench” but restrained myself. And I have used Sheldon’s description to avoid using this dorky device.

If you give the Globe your email address you can read the complete story.
