one pothole, one impact -> 6 punctures!

3 sets of snakebites from one small pothole. gotta be a record of some sort!

serves me right for being too lazy to air up my tyres properly.

Just luck. ;) Was that your gravel rig, looks a 33-5mm tube.

As far as I know, I have only snake bit once on pavement ever. Which does not mean it has happened and went unnoticed, as in new tube in and old tube in pocket. But I always note where the hole is so I can make sure the tire has no residual spearing of the new tube from a shard/wire/etc.

I hit a 3/4" chunk of gravel squarely with the rear wheel to cause it. 23mm Service Course Michelin. No tire damage, and a pretty new tire too. I hate hate hate loosing a tire in the first 100 miles, especially a Vittoria. It happens though.

definitely low air. i surmised i was running 10-15psi below my minimum ride pressure on 32s.

Multiple impacts?

I wonder how you got that many punctures from a single impact. The most I've ever seen is 4, two on each side that line up with each other. This happens when the tube folds on itself and gets pinched on both the right and left sides, typically from hitting something square like a curb.

Perhaps more important, how is your rim?

"Add (more) rim tape?"

Logic?

I lean less always, but with the ultra thin kapton tape which is all I use anymore, my opinions have changed on rim tape. I started this due to the rims I was buying to build wheels are all tubeless ready. These present mounting challenges not present before the tech came onto the scene. Some tube/tires worse than others, some near impossible. Nothing like a 20 minute flat repair with multiple broken plastic tire irons. Have got blood blisters.

I may or may not have mentioned on the forum. I have given up all my old rim tape types of the past. For 3 seasons now I am using only Kapton tape. Ebay search for "Kapton Tape High Temperature Heat Resistant Polyimide"

I have been using two to three layer with tubes, and 2 layers with one Pacenti tubless layer for tubeless. I did say 'only', so I fibbed there. No more thick tape for me.

I have not had to re-tape any of the earliest installs, to comment as to it holding up in the long term.

just the one

the holes are in deed in pairs...i'm guessing i hit the side and bottom of the pothole at the same time. the last hole is obscured behind finger.

Nevermind about rim tape - I didn't look that closely....the second image is more illustrative and helpful - side by side/paired punctures, that is.

It still doesn't make sense

A worst-case pinch flat should create 4 punctures, all lined up around the circumference of the tube (one pair for each rim bead). In most cases, you only get two punctures, either both on one bead or one on each, but still in close proximity around the circumference of the tube. You've got three pairs of punctures along the length of the tube, which would indicate three separate impacts, but not necessarily at the same time.

Does air leak out of all six holes? I wonder if perhaps you've got four old, partial punctures and one pair that actually leaks. Did you have to ride any significant distance on the flat tire?

I can't imagine this a a single shot either. Unless maybe the bottom of the crater had a 28" ish concave radius you managed to bottom into that was 5-6" of the 28" curve. ;)

Did the rim need some truage?

front. all 6 punctures are fully punctured! i cant explain it either.

i was definitely running excessively low psi, in the ~30psi range on a 32 width tire. riding at very low speed, 5-10mph, and dropped the tyre into a funny shaped pothole while easing up to a redlight.

it might be that the pothole was actually a long/skinny broken up hole at the asphalt/concrete transition at the side of the road. rim is pretty much OK, as the impact was at such a low speed.

air came out fast and i rolled maybe 5ft (at low-low speed) before unclipping and waddling over to the grassy knoll to affect repairs.

Excellent, your puncture quota is filled through 2018. That's how it works, right?
