Requirements

Erik:

What are the requirements for a drive that will work in your machine?

I think a mixed drive is a good idea for a desktop/side machine, but for my notebook, a combination of an internal all-SSD and an external hard drive has worked pretty well.

@Erik - can't see why an SSHD wouldn't work in your iMac. The physical form factor is identical to a normal SATA drive, and as far as the rest of the hardware and operating system is concerned, it is just a normal drive.

If you google "imac sshd" you'll find lots of hits indicating compatibility - eg here's a business selling the same drive I have as a Mac upgrade: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Seagate/ST4000DX001S/ - if you scroll down that page they list the compatibility with various model Macs, and the only non-compatible models are from 2012 and 2013...
