AirBnB anyone?

AirBnB anyone?

I'm intrigued by the possibility. I've heard both positive and negative report from people I know. So I'm curious if anyone had used it.

I'm a fan of regular B&B. Small building (or just a big house), friendly host, usually quiet location. I'm willing to put up with less than perfect appliance, no swimming pool, and don't need a bellhop to carry my bag to my room. Some of those B&B however, can cost MORE than a mid-range motel!

Am I understanding the concept correctly, that AirBnB is basically running an BnB without a licence?

Would you use it? Have you used it?

Elaine said a Doc from work used it in Paris on Vacation and raved all aspects. Also has a friend with a nice house on the Gorge here with Mt Adams and gorge views that has been on the bringing in renters side several times for weekends mostly. She would have said something if negatives knowing Julie. ;)

@Walter

Yeah they are both the same (though airbnb seems to have more "hip Cache" kind of like uber).

Kinda scary to me and I am sure my home would not qualify for that type of service. I have way to many non-PC things in my home, deer mounts, firearms etc.

I know uber cars have to be less than 10 years old, even though my 03 Tahoe would be perfect for hauling drunk 20 somethings around downtown Charleston or Myrtle Beach.

My son and nieces/nephews LOVE uber. They are much cheaper than a cab, more fun and there right away to pick you up. Many uber drivers make the ride more than a pickup and drop off, some sing, tell jokes, make the fares sing and tell jokes etc.

most airbnb/homeaway offerings are not...

...primary residence that people rent out. they are usually revenue-generating rental properties and outfitted as such.

As stated Charleston and Myrtle Beach SC. Both prime areas for Uber. Few decent cabs and lots of drinking 20 somethings. During the 4th of July week the family kids used Uber every night they went out. They loved it in MB.

There is no way in all the world I would uber in my town. NOPE.

There is no market for AirBnB here either.

I rented a first floor one bedroom arrangement last year, kind of a one bedroom studio (I know that doesn't make sense.) It was a retrofitted area and the floor was maybe two feet below street level. The toilet didn't flow properly. Now that I think about it, neither did the shower. But the owners took the issue seriously and contracted a plumber to install an appropriate fix - after I left. I think I was the second tenant and the first one was afraid to say something because the owners were surprised. There's a disconnect in the circumstance I can't quite bridge but it doesn't matter and I chalk it up to dealing with non-professionals.

Overall it was a good experience. It's nice staying somewhere that is like a home instead of a hotel room. Sincere non-professional innkeepers are definitely up to the task.

We just returned today from a week's cycling around Lorne, where we booked our accomodation through AirBnB. Wasn't any problem, accomodation was up to spec. Several of our friends used AirBnB to book most of their accomodation when travelling in Europe recently, and I haven't heard bad reports from any of them.

My wife and I did 2 different AirBnbs earlier this year on a trip to Miami Beach.

First night we stayed in Ft Lauderdale on a 30' boat docked in a private, gated condo community that had their own marina. Guy lived in the condo and almost never took his boat out since he had plenty of reservations. That was a one night stay that we did because he was 10 minutes from the airport, we had a late afternoon flight and just wanted something nearby and easy. Marina had a great restaurant and it was fun to walk the docks the next morning and see the REAL boats there. Amazing.

Then we spent 2 nights in a 2 bedroom apartment that was owned by a guy who had it as an investment property in Miami Beach. Great location and WAY cheaper than the hotels in the area.

Those 2 were "rent entire place" type bookings. Owner was nearby and available if anything came up (which it didn't).

Then back in March when I was in TN doing a few days of riding my buddy and I spent a night in a converted walk out basement that had a bed, a pull out sofa and a bathroom - pretty much the equivalent of a studio apartment. Owner lived upstairs. Again - location & price were excellent.

I think the listing, photos & feedback tells you everything you need to know about the quality of the experience...I'll continue to use them when I travel.
