In Eddie B's book there is a great picture of Saronni lifting his arms while the canny Urs Freuler pips him at the line.
And this is one reason why I wasn't 6 inches off Rick's wheel crossing the line....:)

Didn't that happen to Zabel in Milan-San Remo a few years back? He lifted his arms in celebration too soon and Oscar Freire beat him over the line.
Regarding whether bike weight makes a difference, there was an article on this very subject on the Velonews web site recently:
