Sad. Even with a 12 year ban, Ricco is caught trying to buy blood doping products just to set some unoffical climb records! It's hard to imagine something more desperate. Dude needs help.

It seems like these days there are different levels of athletes who will take drugs to perhaps stay relevant in their part of the cycling galaxy, and no doubt many who haven't nurtured much of a career, or life, outside of racing.
That "Beaker Meeker" guy comes immediately to mind.

This guy, being a well-known (ex) pro, might have been making a bit of money by attending those Grand Fondos and such, so making news by challenging records may have been his way of advancing his diminished career if you will.

Or he might have just been trying to stay relevant, perhaps trying to live up to his image of himself as a serious racer, as a stud as they say.

I almost have to remind myself not to fault the guy because a transfusion went bad, but even as he has seemingly not learned much lessons from that, it does serve as a reminder to others that becoming a cheating pro is far, far from being such a great thing. Not easy, and not safe.
But for the thrill of being on a podium and in the newspapers...

Doping aside, his mouthy, bragging attitude while racing and before the doping was discovered indicates a less than stable personality.
