GoPro video camera
I was given a year old GoPro 3 this week and wondered if other folks here had used one. I think sandiway has but I am not sure. It came with tons of the sticky mounts but I want a pic rail mount for my shooting sports and a bar mount for cycling. I got the LCD back for it too but that seems of little value when I use the iphone app for the controls.

I use a GoPro on the race car. Works fine with a roll bar mount. Mine is older and does not have the wifi remote. Didn't know there was an Iphone app to contol it.
It's a popular brand in motorsports. Don't know of any pic rail mounts. There are a couple of cylindrical competitors that seem like they might go better on a gun mount, like Contour, but of course thay would not be free!

With the wifi feature turned on it appears to eat the battery. I think for most uses the one touch/on and record will be best. I do like that I can silence all sound and LEDs for hunting if I like.
It's UI stinks really.

First use was strapped to my dog's neck. Not so good because he can't pay attention to anything for more than a few seconds.
Used it riding today, fun film from odd angles.

Unlike many of us ?
Coapman sent me a VID on his handlebar earlier this year, I got motion sickness watching it. ;)

old gopro
I have an old gopro.
Since the video quality is so-so, I'm on the lookout for something better. Also, something with better battery life.

Mine is a hero 3. The picture quality is pretty good.
Much better video than my PAS waterproof camera. Battery life appears to be about 2 hrs of run time.

Good to know Gopro has improved their video quality.
My Olympus waterproof camera (TG-1) vastly outperforms my older Gopro.
Not to mention, the Olympus takes decent still pictures too.
It'd be cool to have a waterproof camera for mounting on the bike that takes video continually (loops) with decent battery life - enough for a century or something.

Mine will loop but I doubt it would last a full century.I would guess 2.5 hrs on one charge with the wifi off.
I have a 3 silver which is not as good as the black. I get 1080p at 30FPS while the Black gets 60fps. I have been shooting my rides at 720p 60FPS to handle the movement like pedaling cleanly. I may try it a 1080p 30FPS for comparison.
In outdoor lighting it does well.

There are some nice new designs out there...finally
The Garmin looks good, too. GoPro got to market first and has been succesfull in spite of having a terrible, clunky form factor for anything other than a chest mount. I suspect that lower profile products like this Sony and the Garmin will ultimately grab a large share of the market.

image stabilization
The Gopros and the Garmin don't have image stabilization. You might not need it on smooth roads. But the Sony has SteadyShot.

I have used mine on my bike and some roads do vibrate it pretty good.
So far it has been a fun to play with item but not a requirement.

Erik, i know the standard GoPro mounts can show a lot of vibration not to mention they break very easily. Not cheap, but get a K-edge mount if you can, much better PQ and not inclined to let your camera go flying down the road either.
I keep tossing up the idea of getting a camera myself, but wouldnt take it on every ride so no doubt the ones i do will be boring and the ones i dont will have somethung interesting happen. I'd like to video some nice fast descents, but once you've done them once, seems a bit pointless.

I may keep taking mine because I often have wildlife on the road with me. Deer, turkeys, hogs, yotes, and snakes are very common and it would be fun to share those sightings.

Here are some 15 sec low res Instagram videos. Instagram is not always pics of your lunch.

The vibration isn't that bad...
...and it gives one a better sense of the road conditions.

I tried the 1080p at 30fps, it was not so hot at all. On my computer you can see and notice pixelation and jitter in the fast moving background as it flows by.
720p at 60fps works much better.
The 3+ and 3Black do the 1080 60fps.
Sandiway have you seen the output from the Sony?
I wish I had mine fully charged today. I got stopped by an idiot air cop who tried to tell me I had to ride in the far right gutter and was to slow for the road. Well the speed limit was 25mph and I was doing 20mph. It was really comical at points where I almost had to say, "don't taze me bro!"
I know his boss, it did not fare well for him, being that he is an LEO yet does not know the law.

Only the youtube sample videos that have been posted.
It's brand new so it hasn't been reviewed yet by the major online places...
