internal geared hub?

Here's a crazy idea... What if you went to a Shimano Alfine 11 speed or a Rohloff 14 speed setup? Would it result in a net savings of weight? That is when you account for no dérailleurs, second chain ring, minimal brake levers, etc. Or use a lighter internal 5 or 8 speed hub in combination with keeping the two chain-rings in the front.

Don't know about the Shimano Alfine, but we have two bikes and one tandem using the Rohloff hub, and it doesn't save you any weight. It's built like a tank. I think there's a comparison somewhere on the Rohloff web site showing that using the Rohloff hub and shifter increases weight by a couple of hundred grams compared to what you would need to get the equivalent gear range in a Deore XT setup, and so it would outweigh a road setup by more than that.
