I bought this UniVega frame on eBay for $25.00 (including shipping), then stripped the unnecessary cable stops and had it powder-coated a nice french vanilla color at Sonny Wheelock's shop for a palty $40.00. Bits and pieces that came from eBay and my spare parts cach?include: LX cranks and cantilever brakes, Exage levers, Salsa stem, TTT Primo bars, and a practically new perforated Turbo saddle. The odd-sized seatpost, and the cheap cartridge BB and HS, and Dia Compe cable set all came from Nashbar. Look closely and you'll see a v-brake noodle in that front cable routing. Little bits include black Kool-Stop pads, American Classic seatpost binder and bottle cage, neat FRM front skewer (originally from Mark Hoskin!), and an unusual off-road version of Look pedals. I built-up the 3x wheels with Suzue hubs (I swapped to a hollow front axle for a quick release), polished Sun CR18 rims, and black DT double-butted spokes - 46x17(&18) gearing with Surly cogs. The black Cinelli bar tape, 25mm Axial Pro tires, and an Sram singlespeed chain finished it up. 23# 2oz, fits me perfectly, and rides nice and smooth. I reckon I plowed just a tad over $400.00 into this one as he sits. |
